The 1.9 Pd 105 Has a 6 speed box in my Touran and also in the Mk 5 golf, if that's the route your going down then a VW donor car would be the source.

 

but as mentioned above, it does not make much difference at motorway speeds, 70mph in 6th in mine is 2400 rpm.

Ill try the 5 speed box in our T5 1.9pd 105 n see what it is at 70mph. Out of interest.

I had a proper look yesterday on the way to Glasgow and at 70 it revs around 2100 which isn't too bad. Plus the torque there is still decent, pulls well if needed. It was just a fleeting fancy tbh - thinking of trying something different!

Yeah. Drop much below 2100 and youll be out of the torque and it wont pull very well when you put your foot down, especially with the 1.6. Its not the strongest of engines

I was surprised that the rpm was that high at 70 mph with the 6-speed box, was hoping for an rpm around 2000 to be honest with the 1.9 PD lump.

 

An additional negative in my opinion is that 1st is very short legged, and of course the obvious, your shifting more often meaning more clutch work.

 

I would still prefer a long legged 5 speed box any day over a 6-speed, but to be fair to the 6 speed its very slick to use.

Yeah. 1st is short legged on the 2.0pd 140 too.

Agreed, I'm just surprised that coupled to any PD Engine which are renowned for low down torque, there so short legged, In fact I often miss gears when just cruising along ( 4th straight to 6th ) as it can handle it with ease.

Yup. Sometimes dont even use first on the loaded up van.

Pulls away in second like most vans do in first lol.

For several years up to 2 years ago the Fabia was selling almost as many as all the other Skoda models put together in the UK, 

so it could not have been all bad, people road tested them then many many bought what was available.

 

The cars are what they are, and now discontinued, and replaced with all new models in 5,6 and 7 speeds so it is hardly worth moaning about what they were or were not building and selling 1999-2014.

They work just fine even with lower powered/ small engines in the likes of Fiat / Jeep.

Almost like CVT's.

 

Between 0-60 and 0-70 mph with UK NSL's they are up and down gears to try and give good economy just like 7 speed DSG's that might be in 7th by 50 mph.

(out of 1st before 5mph and never back in first until you almost come to a halt)

The thing you've got to remember is that the gearing is designed to work in all scenarios. Too short a 1st gear and it's pointless. Too long and you risk not being able to set off on steep hills or manage low speed manoeuvres.

 

1st in the DSG is also very short and it revs out very quickly setting off with full throttle. While crawling in traffic it uses second gear not first.

On some engines petrol / diesel & 6 or 7 speed DSG that can be very different, and the DSG can be changing and causing issues dropping to 1st and 2nd and not settling, and Updates were required and advisable.

On 'some' DQ200 7Speed Twin Dry Clutch cars that have the issue crawling in traffic at very slow speeds over a distance the answer can be to put the lever into 'S' instead of 'D' and be careful on the throttle, then move to 'D' when the traffic starts moving.
