........I'm all for it. If you break the law, pay a fine.

I would be in total agreement with that statement if the so called "law" was in tune with modern day thinking. Speed limits for motorways were introduced in the 60's doesn't mean to say they are right though. Introduce "sensible" speed limits and only then will you get me on your side with this one.

no not those ones/........ theses are actually set INTO the road abd are fine black lines so unless you concentrate they are hard to see

Ah, those ones. I know the ones you mean. They couldn't possibly be for Trafficmaster at all? Monitoring the amount of traffic on a road at all?

70mph is quick enough for me. If its not quick enough for you, start walking, then tell me which is quicker

The purple trunking I have been told is for cable companies, by running along Motorways they can cover large distances with "minimal" disruption but this could all be for the new scameras

maybe - certainly would not dispute that as it sounds logical ...... but if there was a network of cameras being developed tehy would want it kept quiet - maybe using a cable company use for that ....

It doesn't need to be quiet, there is the Freedom of Information Act now. You can reveal so many things from Police, Army etc if you request it...

There is that logic but I dont think there is a single driver in the country that can honestly say they have never been speeding.Wether its a deliberate cruise down the motorway at 100 or an inadvertant moment of careless use of the throttle that makes you do 33 in a 30 or instead of braking as you approach a 30 limit you just ease off and let the speed drop .... its all speeding and as they get more and more venonous about it would you still adopt a moral stand like that if you got points in one of the latter two events?

maybe i'm just being cynical  or maybe its because i've done well over 700,000 miles in 6 company cars and have developed a suspicion of the methods used against the motorist here .Freedom of Information Act is fine but it will only show you what they want you to see ..... people being economical with the truth?? surely not! :D

It's very good logic to apply when you are showing a newly passed young driver, they all think that they can do whatever speed they like now, but remind them that a car at 70mph beats a pair of feet at 3mph and it kinda sinks in that yeah, 70mph is ok.

I am more careful of my speed than ever these days. I see how easily many 'accidents' happen and how a little less speed could have saved a life or spared a fractured bone. Do you know who you should blame? Not the government really, but large companies. How many times are you expected to run about the office/warehouse/whatever and get such and such done? Same applies to drivers too, they expect the impossible which leads to people doing silly speeds in the wrong areas. Companies put undue pressure on everyone these days to get somewhere and quickly and cheaply. Unfortunately, the government want to decrease the idiot speeds these people reach and the boy racers too, but its as always, the minority spoil it for the majority. they break the limit so we have to get watched as well. 31 in a 30 is easy I will admit. You may not get pulled up for it, but a camera has every right to flash.

It's about time what really happened is honest people shopped the idiots and took pride and care in their country, rather than blame everyone and moan.

*I've not got the top bit as I think I've kind of already answered it*

They can only show you want is no longer sensitive material. They won't show you who they have been following/chasing up for years, but as the De Mendes case proved, they will show anything they can, even if it backfires on themselves.

Somehow, I don't think the system will[/i'] be up and running by next year, considering how much more complicated it will be than the CSA or tax credit systems, which the government have completely failed to get working on time! :D

But the difference is with the CSA and Tax credit systems, involve money going from the government to the people or between people via the government. When it involves money going into government coffers form us, they don't hold back. the London CC did not take long to set up after it had been passed, so I doubt it will be long before this is.

Also this system can be used for the proposed road tolling and will make it easier to bring in as the network to handle it is already up and running so set up costs will be less

point 1 - So if you did get done for 31 in a 30 you would be quite happy about it and wouldn't moan like most of us??

point 2 rather than the current hysterical antispeed rants what they should be doing is looking at the real problem - the way people drive - dangerous manouvers etc

Speed alone is not a problem - 100 down an empty motorway is worlds apart from 60 past a school but they are both 30 above the limit - but only one is truely dangerous. If the authorities were to look at making the roads a safer place then I dont think many people would complain but I get severely pi55ed off when going along the m23/25 with cruise set at 70 and watch the acts of unbelieveable stupidity that happen regularly - these are what cause accidents -

BTW i am only defending the lower levels of speeding - not extreme speeding

You want me to walk on a motorway?, I'll stick with me car thanks. I'm pretty sure it will get me to the meet tommorrow a darn site quicker than walking!.

1 - Not really, fair cop I guess. The law is the law.

2 - I personally would like 80mph on a motorway, but anything over and I doubt greatly that without more training that I could keep up with things moving so fast. We have new drivers, experienced drivers and old drivers on the roads. If we were all experienced, no problem, but we all have to give a little to allow for others to be safe. And I know how stupid people are on those roads, I live near you don't forget :)

Can't walk on a motorway  But do you see my point? If you stick at the limit, you will still get there a lot quicker than if you walked. It may take 5 minutes longer, but how many years have you got left to live? Is 5 minutes really worth worrying over? Not in my book it isn't, though chances are I'm younger than you and have more years left.

I've seen the diamond cut outs (filled with bitumen) in the road that have been mentioned. They look like the ones at automated car park barriers that always get put in after the tarmac has been laid so I would think there defo some sort of monitering device but I can't see how their speed related. Has anyone driven around the M42 lately because I'm not quite sure where all the cameras are now ?

SPECS? Not likely to see them

My problem with all this over-policing is that it achingly soulless and anal retentive. I don't mind the police reducing their workload with some speed cameras in dangerous places, and checking people's MOT and tax discs, but watching people's every move and making someone go 79mph instead of 80mph on a quiet motorway at 6am in the morning isn't going to save lives.

It's sad that people seem to endorse this pedantic drivel.

i think this is a goddamn joke.

speeding is speeding, if you get caught fair enough but to install something of this scale around the country is taking it to the extremes, surely they cant justify this. and people who have no problem with it, i'm guessing you'll be happy to foot the bill. what will we get hit with? more tax, more expensive fuel? this country is a joke. it'll soon be the case where you get fined for blowing your nose in the wrong place.

unfortunatly i am not in a position to move abroad or i'd be seriously considering it. the roads are a goddamn disgrace, if they spent the money fixing the countless potholes instead of installing toys maybe it wouldnt be so bad.

i'm pretty angry about this, the government or who ever decides this is a ****ing fool.

Moose, youv'e totally lost me on this one, I would have expected this kind of reaction from our Briskodian elders but not from someone of your tender years. Fair play to you though, I wish more of our younger generation had as much respect for our roads and vehicles as you do then we might not be having this conversation now!.

Thankyou

If I'm honest, I was almost expecting a barrage of PM's saying how much of an idiot I am. :o

Cheers mate :rofl::rofl:

For the amount of money this is all likely to cost, they could build more schhols, hospiatls, put more bobbies on the beat, hell, probably all of these, instead of catching more people speeding. Think how much safer the roads would be if they spent the money properly training people and having re-tests every 5 years instead of just a money collecting camera collection.

Honestly, how many people drive at 80 - 90 on a motorway sensibly, compared to idiots lane hopping and driving too close to the car in front? I would hazard a guess at 90% safe 'speeders' and 10% idiots, if that. If the police have to start using cameras more, stop and fine the idiots and leave the safe drivers alone, even if they are driving a bit over the current limit.

10% idiots

*I've extracted a bit*

Only takes 1 idiot to ram you hard in the back, causing you to panic steer from lane 3 across to lane 2, then a chain reaction has started. If high speeds and lorries get involved, think of how busy the local mortuary will be.

Do you even drive these days, or are you disinclined to go anywhere in case someone does bang you up the ****? You can't plan for everything, and you can't mitigate every risk. If you drive safely within your own limitations (not the cars), AND be aware of what everyone else around you is doing, including using all of your mirrors, then you should be OK. If you do get involved in a big pile up, chances are you have stopped paying attention somewhere along the way...
