All in all the CarPlay / Android Auto experience with the S3 for atleast me has been pretty flawless.

Meaning that no software update has made the Carplay / Android auto malfunction, atleast not in my case.

Both applications work as they are supposed to, the only thing that is bad, is that they are both at limited functionality.

I personally like Apple CarPlay better, because it looks better and for me it works better.

Android auto has the capability of enabling offline navigation but I dont like how the whole Android interface looks.

Despite that, both of these have huge potential, the only big con here is that the functionality needs to evolve faster.

For instance, the use of Waze. Apple CarPlay propably wont add it. Android Auto announced it in 2016 summer, but yet, still no Waze.

Inaaris,

Waze works in Android Auto for me. Have it installed as a separated app, but when AA is connected Waze seems to sit on top of the normal Google maps.

Hope that helps

Smudgers can you make some kind of screenshots.

Atm I can´t understand what you mean.

Can you choose Waze separately or you do smthing else?

Inaaris,

Sorry to be so long in getting back to you. I cant find a way of taking pictures with phone attached to Android Auto(AA) - sorry.

Anyway, I'll try and explain - I'm assuming you already have AA working:

1. I installed Waze on my phone

2. When I connected phone to car INITIALLY I had to give permissions to the app to access various parts of the phone, I allowed everything.

3. Now when I connect the phone I get a message on Columbus screen saying AA is connected (this can take 30 seconds or so). I go to Columbus menu and select AA. The AA home screen appears and in bottom left of screen is an arrow symbol. Press this and mapping starts, The map displayed is (I think) from Waze as it is different from the standard Google maps I had before Waze was installed on phone.

4. Upon further testing it would seem that Columbus only has partial Waze functionality but I think is still better than the basic Google mapping.

Hope that helps.

I've yet to be able to use WAZE on my wife's Fabia using the Android Auto, it's always been Google Maps (I can tell from the destinations history) though it does look diffrerent to how using Google maps/navigation/driving would look on a phone.

Wish Apple would Allow Waze with the iphone :-(

I have Waze on my iPhone which I installed because so many keep going on about it. Having tried it, along with other apps, I'm obviously an odd-one-out because I still prefer using the built-in navigation.

There is a halfway-house workaround for having Waze do the navigation whilst in CarPlay which also applies to other non-CarPlay navigation apps.

Thanks but I don't understand that workaround. Surely it's just the sound that comes through the speakers so not sure what the difference is between that and just using Bluetooth. At least with Bluetooth I can see the screen.

I did say it was a halfway-house workaround!!!

If you want to hear Waze navigation and warning announcements while using CarPlay then, for the time being, that appears to be the only resolution.

P.S. Apple won't approve any app for CarPlay that isn't compatible with Siri voice control, which lies at the heart of controlling CarPlay. Don't expect Google to be rushing to make the iOS version of Waze "Hey, Siri" compatible when it conflicts with their own "OK, Google".
