Green cotton filter too small and partially dropped into airbox

Featured Replies

Has anyone else had problems with their green cotton filter not seeming to fit the airbox properly?

Bought it two days ago along with a pd160 intake, and the guy at the shop fitted it as he was fitting the air intake. He didn't seem too familiar with it and had a bit of a job getting the airbox lid on.

Anyway, decided to check it today, and found one corner of the filter had dropped off the 'lip' of the airbox and had dropped down by over an inch - this left quite a large gap around the edge of the filter at one end.

Having seen some of the pics of what people have found in their filter when cleaning it, bird feathers and such, I wasn't too happy - anything could have got into the engine!

Are they all a bit small like this or have I got a duff one? If they all are a bit on the small side, anyone else had this problem?

I've reseated it making sure it's central, but am paranoid now and can see myself checking it after every run!

Yep, they're not a great fit and Ross spotted this on his Fabia vRS ... it didn't make a good seal with the air box either. Saying that, I ran mine for 20k miles like that without problems.... :D

mine has done this before, I just pushed it back into place. I also gave it a bit of a pull to expand it, though if it goes wrong dont blame me.

I'm not totally happy with the fit of it, but until I sort my project out then it will have to do!

Cheers, reassuring replies - maybe it's worth making a little cutout gasket type thing to go round the edge of the filter to make it a bit bigger. I'll keep an eye on it for now.

Mine fits like a dream, but I did "stretch" it a little before putting it in.

It was still in place properly when I last cleaned it too...

And yes, the air box lid is a right PITA to get bcak on... :(

I think I will get the K&N one, or pipercross filter, hoping they fit better.

The JR one fits very well. And it's cheaper.

Presumably the OEM one is a perfect fit?

Bit of black electrical tape around the rubber sides

I put mine in last week. It didn't fit easily, but eventually worked by disconnecting the pipe clamp (on the left) and 'seating' it the upper lid before lowering it down and locating the lugs.

I think its okay. Feels smooth and there's no whistling noises or anything.

Verr.

Mine fitted perfectly.

I've fitted a jr in my Octavia 4x4 1.8T and it doesn't fit well too..:(

I recently had my MAF toasted..and it was full of dust, because the jr is to small to fit the stock airbox properly. If I push it down,it drops:thumbdwn: The OEM filter fits perfectly though..:) and I think it's the only one which is ok.

I am almost sure that the problem is in the airbox which has been "opened"more than it was, when new-due to opening-closing so many times![83000km till now..]

ps:Is it true that kn filter includes a special sealing glue for that reason?

Even more with the strut brace fitted !!

a quick trip to B & Q for foam draught strip. A piece along the edge makes it a snug fit with no c**p getting into the engine

Totally agree.

Last time I cleaned mine I thought I had developed a bit of a knack for doing it, but the other day probably took about 20mins just to get the air box cover on (and much swearing and shouting). Think next time I'll loosen off the bolts.

They do...got one in mine, fitted nicely.

I was definitely impressed by the quality of the K&N filter compared to the Green I had! :D

What about the Stryt brace. My bro cant seem to get the airbox off without removing the brace and thats an &rse as the strut brace seems to be about 3mm too short and as such the bolts on one end go in at an angle and the thread is starting to wear.

I got my air filter out without removing my strut brace (MOMO Seat one) but it was a real bugger and would have been quicker just to slacken off the strut brace bolts. IIRC, we did that when I swapped air filters with Xav and it took about 5 minutes :D
