2.0L or 1.6L TDI Octavia Mystery

Featured Replies

I bought what I thought was a 1.6 TDI SE Octavia Estate off Motorpoint this week and it turns out its actually registered with the DVLA and Skoda as a 2.0. Is there anyway of definitively being able to tell? I've taken the engine cover off and it's not obvious. Am going to find a quiet motorway slip road later to do a 0-60 as that should be a giveaway. Not sure whether to kick off with Motorpoint yet as although I think  I've got a better car for my money and the insurance and tax implications are small I do 20k miles a year so fuel economy is an issue. Looking back through Motorpoint's 1.6 TDI SE estate ads I don't think it's just my car that has this discrepancy as a few of them have different vehicle details from the headline when you look closely.

Look at the sticker under the carpet in the boot (or in the service book). It will have the engine code and power output in kW.

On the options sticker which should be in the boot somewhere it will have the kw printed.

Externally does it have a TDI badge? Is the I red?

If you do 20k+ miles per year you'll be glad of the extra power and fuel economy will be minimal difference as the 150CR is less strained. I have averaged over 56mpg since new, tracked via Fully and regularly get full tanks over 60mpg with some runs getting high 60s.

Look under the rear valance....if it has a twin exhaust exit rather than a single...also it has a 6th gear its a 2.0 TDi.

Performance wise quite obvious too as the 2.0 has 45 more horses so is quite a bit quicker.

Now there is an easy way to tell! Look at top of gear lever - 5 or 6 gears.

Not necessarily reliable: there has been a pre-Euro 6 Greenline version of the 1.6 TDI with 110hp (instead of 105) and a 6 speeds gearbox.

I guess it was available in the UK as well...

Our greenline was a model in its own right...basically as SE spec but not labelled an SE. I think other markets could have the greenline motor in various trims.

Clear, thanks.

So the 6th gear and twin exhaust would make it a 2.0, indeed.

Motorpoint are known for it.

They were advertising Honda CRV SE models and they were in fact SR models with higher spec and worth more.

Motorpoint sell a lot of non-UK spec vehicles that they import somehow - is it a UK spec vehicle and who is the registered first keeper?

Best way to be sure is look at the vehicle data sticker as others have said, but it is unusual for a vehicle to be registered incorrectly, but does happen occasionally.

cheers. it is a 2.0. i found the sticker and looked up the code of the engine sticker. i'm going to keep it and got motorpoint to agree to pay a small bit more for my old car.

looking at their ads its not just my car as the tech spec detail on some of their autotrader ads doesn't match the 1.6 TDI SE headline on the ad and is clearly for a 2.0 instead.

here's an example:

2.0L or 1.6L TDI Octavia Mystery............ SOLVED.

And they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those pesky Briskodians!!!

Or the 6th gear, or the twin exhaust outlet, or the sticker in the boot. But mainly the Briskodians!!

Hurrah!!

Not such a bad thing hey guys.....the 1.6 is perfectly good but the 2.0 has alot more performance with very little increase in running costs.

Id consider it a bit of a result :-)
