Pointless drives?

Featured Replies

I dunno if I've asked this before, maybe not, but how many of you go for pointless drives, i.e. just driving somewhere for the fun of it...

Why do you do it?

Where do you go?

Day or night?

How far do you drive?

Do you like to cruise, or give it some lead foot?

Do you like to go alone, or take a friend(s)?

Speaking personally, I like going out for drives. For me, sometimes staying in the house is just plain boring, and it seems a shame to let all the money you spend on these things go to waste sitting on the drive.

I also dont mind whether its day or night, although daytime drives are often a little bit more enjoyable for me, night time can be a bit hazardous at times.

There are loads of fun roads to use around here, and its good to mix a bit of cruising with a bit of manic speed...

As to whether I go alone, it depends, sometimes its nice to have company, other times you can get more engrossed in the drive when you are alone.

What about you lot?

Don't do it much now but used to go out on pointless drives alone, used to just drive around the island sometimes or drive to the beach. seem to be drawn to the beach even in the winter, something about the power of the sea  used to be nice being alone in my car thinking about the meaning of life :D

Loads of random drives (Only been on road 8 Months)

Usually go on drives to get out of London and into surrey for a bit of good driving! Or just pop out and pick up mates.

something about the power of the sea

With you 100% on that, unfortunatly I live in the most central place in England with the relation to where the sea is :(

I feel for you. At least the cows around here are real and not concrete!!:rofl:

I go out on a night quite a lot. I quite often finish from work around 8PM so after driving a merc sprinter all day its nice to be chucked back into the seat from the immense power of the fabia :D I usually target boy racers and 'own' them.

You might consider my wednesday night "drives" pointless, but to me its meeting up with fellow car enthusiasts and people I consider friends. :) So thats not pointless. I guess my commute work every day would be considered pointless?

I think even pointless drives have some form of aim and desire. ;)

yeah i go for drives occasionally great roads up here in scotland :-)

Not so much in my car now (though I used to) , but most of my bike rides have no point other than to go for a run.

Sometimes it's just a gentle bimble , other times I can really get into it and make some good progress.

It tends to be for at least an hour , sometimes two , and sometimes all day

Generally to work & back again, but I tend to take a backroad now and then to blow off a little steam.

Night time driving mainly due to hours worked at the moment, but kinda do a bit of allsorts I suppose.

Trying hard not to be too naughty speeding wise on motorways ;)

I love the feel of being out and about, love the chance to pick the road for its fun factor, love the buzz of a good drive.

Where do you go?

Depends on mood and car. Last couple of fun drives were a trip to the Suffolk coast via the B roads from Chelmsford in Essex in the Omega and a completely pointless tharsh around the north Essex countryside lanes in the Fabia.

Day or night?

Either and both.

How far do you drive?

Have done a drive from Chelmsford to the Black mountains to watch the sun come up! Might just go out for an hour or less another time.

Do you like to cruise, or give it some lead foot?

Generally a bit of both. Sometimes I like to do a challenge where I will set myself the goal of driving very quickly but neatly on the nsl roads and giving it the full IAM drive in the built up areas (speed limits observed, maximum anticipation and observation, top economy techniques etc)

Do you like to go alone, or take a friend(s)?

Depends on mood. Take a freind or other half if going somewhere, sometimes just on my own for a circular. Used to love going out early sunday morning, maybe take the camera, and just see what and where I ended up. That is kind of ruined by the last few years of golf fossils / boot sale pikeys cluttering up the roads round here.

I really just love the feeling of relaxation or exhileration that comes from a really good drive. It makes me focus and helps me to relax and forget the problems life can bring.

plenty of random drives in my time. 3 oe 4 times a week when i was younger :D

tight winding country roads late at night so no one else is about making sufficient progress is great fun but a nice gentle drive around can be nice.

when i went to wales for rally i was driving in a pretty relaxed way but i found myself driving across the brecons at around 2am and once i ound myself on a very good road i think i may have gained about 2 or 3 mph per corner untill i found myself keeping it in third, following the 'racing line' nd forgetting about everything else in the world. best few miles i have driven in a very long time

My drive to work is great, mainly b-roads and minor roads with no moarkings on some of them:)

Seeing as i set off at 6am the roads are usually quite empty and i can give it some welly. But the last coupleof days have been proper frosty so been going steady.

Try to get out for a blast around now and then. Within a short distance of my house is what i like to call " the test track " - lots of small country roads with good bends etc well away from anywhere.

My mate brought the Fabia vRs demonstator round and we took it there for a blast, my other mate had an Audi A4 1.8T avant for the day which we also took round the "test track". Can't go into it too much but it ended up having to be picked up by a low loader after a bit too much "air" over a hump in the road:rolleyes:

If i do any mods to my car i always take it around "the test track" to see how it feels.

:D I usually target boy racers and 'own' them.

PMSL, good man. Me too.

Tend to go on drives in the evening to let out stress and get away from things.

Where i live there is a loverly road from chepstow to Abergavenny, (very popular with bikers) which is just a long B road, great road for thrashing it.

Its about 35-40 mile round trip and takes about 30mins. It will be the first route i take the new car along when it arrives to break us in together :D

Used to go for pointless drives in the Scooby, but most of the times I go out now I have something to do/get. Much easier to justify going a nice route to avoid the traffic if I have a purpose ;)

Luckily our baby loves going out in the car (even with me driving!) so I get to go driving to wear her out :D

I used to go for a lot of pointless rides on my motorbike, well not pointless I used to actively seek boyracers hehe. Wasn't much hope for them mind on my Hornet 600.

I love driving and always used to jump in the car and go for a pointless tour. All the fun has been taken out of it now what with speed cameras and traffic but i still do the odd one from time to time.

The last pointless trip was a lap of the M25. Another favorite was London to braintree:eek: using M11 + A120 I dont know what it is about that journey but it makes for a nice drive if the M11 clear.

London to somerset is another one injoy, just got back from there last night, its the one long journey where i always think "Right, todays the day im going to spot another briskoda member" it never happens:thumbdwn:

All pointless drives have to be done alone so you can have what you want on the CD player, if swmbo's in the car its Heart FM all the way, and if my youngest is in the car i may as well not have a stereo because i dont even get a look in:mad:

The last pointless drive i did was in a Superb elegance 24 hr test drive. 450 miles, got up at 4am drove to cirencester to a friends farm had a cup of coffee drove home, nice mixture of motorway and fast a roads.

In my younger days drove to North Wales and back in a day, in my then first car 1.0 Talbot Samba ls was over about 750 miles:eek: A roads their motorway back.

I just love driving:confused:

I often go out for a pointless drive. Sometimes i think that my Fabia VRS has lost some "punch" so i go out and give it some beans for about 40 miles to try and convince myself that it's still as quick as ever!

I then think "what the heck have i done"! I've just wasted a gallon of diesel and put the car understress just to put my mind at rest!

If I've had a tough few days I tend to go for a drive at the weekend.

A few years ago I was on teaching practise in Essex and found the roads to get to school were all twisty B-roads and great fun (perhaps that's why I do the school website!!!).

If I need to unwind I drive most of the way to the school and back. It's only about 20-25 miles in total but it can be quite a challenging road.
