Winters: 1 pair part worns back, 1 pair new front?

Featured Replies

I'm on a budget! A severe one. But I'm heading back to the alps once again in a couple of months & right now, I need 2 tyres anyway. So I'm thinking some part worn winters off eBay at £40 for the back. Then spend out on brand new ones for the front. This will drop my outlay from about £165 to about £120, so a big deal.

Anyone done this? Thoughts?

I may be able to help you. I'm on the verge of swapping my tyres for all seasons and currently have a full set of winters (used) in my shed, they are Nexen Winguard Sport 205/40/17's and have plenty of tread. ill get some measurements as soon as if you are interested.

Sorry dude, wasn't ignoring you. Just assumed nobody would see this. Running crappy 15s anyway. So thanks, but looks like I'm buying 4 new ones to be on the safe side...

The problem with worn rear tyres is that the grip levels will be less. This could result in the rear swapping ends rapidly.

Depends how worn they are, but shouldnt be too bad. Aslong as theyre winters and not summers.

It is dodgey with summers on the back. Lift off oversteer is good fun though haha

I thought that most part used winter tyres, well these being brought in from mainland Europe to be sold in UK, were usually worn down to or near their useful tread depth limit (3.0mm?)  Remember that winter tyres do not perform like winter tyres down to 1.5mm!

Tread wear indicators on most winter tyres are at 4mm, as below that their effectiveness is greatly reduced.

Good advice ;):D
