Screeching noises!

Featured Replies

Hi.

My wife's Mk1 is making screeching noises when she goes around roundabouts. It's more apparent if the car hasn't been driven for a while and it lessens to the point of disappearing as the car continues to be driven.

The noise seems to come from the back of the car so...

I've taken off the rear wheels and had a good look around for anything obvious. Also removed the rear wheel brake hubs and cleaned them out (including the groove between the brake plates and brake hubs); there was a lot of dust in the offside hub and both brakes bind slightly at one point when you turn them by hand.

Whilst the brake hubs were off i checked the wheel bearings for any issues, they turn smoothly and there appears to be no lateral play in them.

I can't see any evidence of body work catching on the rear wheels.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tyre pressure, an obvious one but....

Tyres are regularly checked and last time out I made sure that they were correct, still had the same noise.

Someone suggested filing down the leading edge on the rear brake shoes and check the shoes for glazing. That's something for me to do on Saturday then.

Seriously, new discs and pads make a massive difference. Maybe a stuck pad or slider. I'm glad i changed mine because all the funky noises stopped.

If your hand brake doesn't instantly lock the back wheels at about 5mph you can safely assume that they need to be changed. My handbrake locks tight on brand new discs. I had them done all round.

Another dead give away is if the discs have a lip on the edge, they rust overnight & the rust looks nearly black around the discs vents. If so, change them.

Had to have a slow puncture repaired recently and about a mile after driving away from the tyre place I had loud screeching noises when slightly turning the steering wheel.

Took it back and on the way had screeching when going round a roundabout as well.

They checked the wheel they had removed and no fault found. So they went out with me to hear the noise and we decided it was coming from another wheel.

Nothing found on that wheel/disc either so a test drive again and the noise gradually disappeared.

Conclusion was that there must have been a stone or similar in the pad. (Pads are about half worn).

Not reappeared in the last six weeks.

Thanks. There seems to be a consensus that it's related to the brakes.

The advice I've been given is to file or sand down the leading edge of the brake shoes and check the brake surface for any glazing.

I'll give it a go on Saturday.
