Twin charger Second Wind?

Featured Replies

We all know about VAG's diesel problems, and I'm not going to comment on that. However what is clear is that all the manufacturers will now be looking at their investment in diesel, given the impact on demand that analysts are predicting.

So our friend, the much maligned twin charger, suddenly might not look quite so much like the expensive option perhaps!

1.0 version with 130bhp to fit in where the 1.6TDi sits perhaps? 2.0 to replace the 3.0TDi maybe? Volvo is apparently working on more, maybe others will follow...

You can buy a Euro 6 Emission Golf with a 1.0l Turbo petrol engine now without a Supercharger.

As to Volvo & Twincharging.

In 2010 the CEO of VW USA left and moved to Volvo as the Chairman / CEO.

Stefan Jacoby.

He was there 2010-2012-13,

and Volvo are going ahead with Twincharging.  Diesel & Petrol.

Now he is the Head of GM International.

Given what was happening with VW USA and cars in 2009 - 2010 when he was head of VW USA,

they might want to be talking to him about matters concerning VW Engines and Software.

VW went down the line of Cylinder on Demand / Active Cylinder Technology,

1.4 TSI (1390cc) and 140 then 150 ps,  and those are looking as popular as the Current VW CEO is.

So they have 1.8 TSI Engines now in Hot Polo & Ibiza,

Yet 1.4 Petrol Turbo engines going in the likes of a A4 & Skoda Superb.

Even the 1.0 litre Turbo petrol engines in cars in a class above the size of a 2015 Fabia.

VW / Audi are far advanced on Electric Superchargers.

& Dual Charging using Turbos and Electric Superchargers.

A3's were to be getting them first and also bigger Diesel Audis.

any spec details on the current volvo engines?

Just google Volvo Twincharger 2015 and you will see many articles or reviews on them,

or watch Youtube road tests on different ones.

very much the same sort of set up as the VAG twincharger then... supercharger used for low end instant response. cool.

Looks good, yes?

Very like a grown up version of a vRS Engine Compartment.

Just imagine if that all goes well and goes in a V40 or the likes!

Lighter car and 300 BHP easily achieved,  and the MPG being quoted is US Gallons not Imperial.

250 kw / 335 bhp

Made be wonder back when the CEO of VW USA went to Volvo and then what VW was no longer developing in the way of Twinchargers gets further development by Volvo.

The point was really twincharging in general, whether that's electric or roots. But I'm glad to see Volvo are ahead of me at least, coupled with ACT it seems possible to beat diesel CO2 as well as the other nasties, and maybe for less money.

From 4min 40 on this vid it is pretty much the identical presentation as VW did on Dual Chargers.

It is amazing how the VW Group really did not continue into larger capacity engines than the 1390cc Twinchargers back in 2009.

Volkswagen wasn't the first to market with a twincharger and Volvo will not be the last.
