Alcantara or Leather

Featured Replies

Well yesterday, I order myself the new model. 1.4TSI 150, first petrol in 16 years, but only doing 8k miles a year and with the introduction of AdBlue I thought time for Petrol. My experience of AdBlue of the last 5 years is that although safe (first salesman I meet with it actually drank some to prove it), you have to keep the system air tight and it can make a mess of the paint work if it gets split on it, hence buses and trucks have a stainless steel plate below the filler. The tank should have been in the boot like the Yeti.

SE- L Petrol (Some are calling it Lava) blue. with the dark interior and LED interior lights. Would like the cream as the one in the showroom did look good, but 2 kids and a dog it had to be the dark.

Although I have spec'ed heated seats front and rear I have spec'ed the Alcantara seats as a change. I felt the heated seats were drying out the leather. Although I treated the leather twice a year I felt that the SWBO co pilot seat was wearing faster than the drivers seat. I putting this to due the heated seats being switch on as soon as it drops to 15C. Also leather is freezing in the winter until the heater kicks in. After all this still questioning myself if I have done the right thing.

Has anybody taken delivery of a car with the Alcantara seats and what do you think of them. I know it will come down to taste. I think leather looks better and easier to sell the car in years to come but Alcantara might be more practical.

Any advice, I can still change the seats in the next couple of days.

So what happens when you spill adblue all over the inside of the boot?

This IMO is a very wrong decision to put the filler inside the boot on the Yeti, I cannot recall any truck with a stainless plate below the adblue filler.

Had heated leather in my MKI and MKII Superb and the current Yeti and they never dried out.

Personally I was not a fan of the alcantara in the SE L i test drove (but loved it in our TT)

I work in the bus industry, we have replaced a number of Adblue systems due to air getting in, filler caps being left off or a fitter leaving it disconnected over night when doing a repair. Excess air in system makes the AdBlue crystalise which will clog the system. AdBlue on a cloth dries and not an issue after a couple of days. Paint will not be affected in the short-term but longer term yes. A test is leave some Adblue on a desk for a couple of days and see what it is like. AdBlue is a good system, but for the higher mileage drivers. If you know any Cummins engineers talk to them about they have been the main pushers of AdBlue over the last 5 years in the UK.

Currently I am doing about 8 to 9k a year, hence why after 16 years I am going to switch to Petrol for this car.

I appreciate the mess adblue makes when it is left open to the air (i’m a truck driver) but for me I would still not want it inside the car, having ordered a 190 I have no issues with it being next to the fuel cap, although I imagine it will still be a slow PITA system to refill if trucks are anything to go by??

I think it all comes down to views. One thing I have notice the past week is the massive different advice on usage being issued by salesman. I have had once a year to 25% of diesel used which is just all wrong. during the past week i have looked at Skoda, Mazda and Merc's. The Skoda guys need a but of reading to be done. When i entered a merc dealer looking at the A class, they did make a point is reading out a prepared statement refusing any link to the current diesel issues. They were not happy with my reply that most of the manufacturers have been at it for years, just VW have been caught or shopped.

Hi Rufus

Congratulations on ordering. Had diesel since 1987 when petrol was added in winter due to waxing. Never go back to petrol (more expensive now any way)....although colour on my order is Petrol Blue whats in a name eh? With the Beige leather. Had the dark brown in MKII and no signs of leather drying out and heaters were on all the time for my back therapy. Prior to ordering that hated leather (too cold) but now like the diesel its for ever. Not bothered about the adblue as I am not going to spill it and it will ensure its cleaner than the MKII.

Like Nick_H I have a nine year old........shih tsu. I close my eyes and imagine all horribles and someone else cleaning it up. Never gave it a thought about Alcantara....

Hope it helps.

Reedfarmer I once went to a Zoo but we were really disappointed...... Their was only one dog ! It was a Shih Tsu..... Sorry....

I have a nine year old.... I closed my eyes and imagined a melted Haribo on Leather. I imagined myself removing it....

I then did the same experiment with Alcantara....

I ordered Leather....

Had the same conversation as I wanted alcantara and the wife wanted leather. Guess who won?

Alcantara it is then.

I have alcantara at present but don't like the design/style in the mk3 so am switching to leather

Had alcantara in a B5 passat (2.8 V6 with a supercharger...loved that car)...anyway, I found the seat backs kept pilling (bobbling) so figured maybe not a great idea, but then, fabric tech has probably moved on since then too.

I'm a noob to adblue, so do all the New euro 6 diesels use it?

No, only the 150 4x4 and 190 (2WD and 4x4) uses adblue

Until now I preferred alcantara over full leather. I tested new Superb with full leather and ventilated seats which can be also heated at the same time. On warm sunny day I didn't sweat at all with ventilation.

So now I ordered ventilated, full leather on new Superb.

If you didn't try new ventilated seats, find a dealer that have test car with it and try it yourself. At least for me this feature is amuse on full leather.
