Ordering an L&K this Sunday - have I missed anything?

Featured Replies

Good Morning

I am doing a final test drive on Sunday and then sitting down with the dealer to order a L&K 220hp 2.0 TSI.  Never having ordered a new car before I am obviously a little of out of my comfort zone.

As this is the first new car I have ever owned and as it is being purchased as a living inheritance I want to obviously make sure I don't mess up, they will know and will be travelling in it frequently and on long haul holidays to the Austria Alps, hence could I ask for people to just do a double check for me.  I appreciate that the Superb Mk3 is new and people are still waiting patiently or should that be impatiently for theirs to be delivered.

The spec I am looking at is the:

  • 2.0 220ps TSI DSG
  • Brown Leather with the grey headlining
  • 18 inch Pegasus Anthracite wheels
  • Spare Wheel
  • Quartz Grey paint
  • Rear Window Wiper
  • Rear Backrest Release from boot
  • Heated Washers
  • Smart Light Assist
  • Traffic Assist
  • Rear Camera
  • Mud Flaps (front and rear)
  • Steering Wheel Paddles
  • Extended Warranty
  • Service Plan - going to ask for the car to be on fixed interval servicing

Obviously will be getting GAP insurance, have seen the five year one at ALA for a good price @ £359 that returns to the invoice price plus any price rises.

I have spoken to the dealer and he has agreed not to prepare the car more than needed to just check everything is perfect from the factory and also agrees he cannot match the GAP insurance.  He has nothing but praise for the detailer I am sending the car to upon delivery who has quoted £550 for three days worth of work.

  • Triple wash to remove any contaminants
  • Measure paint depth
  • Light mechanical polish to remove minor problems
  • C1 Crystal Lacquer the car
  • The put another layer of a different lacquer ontop - did not get the code but it was GTechniq.
  • Do the windows, alloys, fabrics, leather, plastics, engine compartment
  • Apparently the base layer the C1 is good for 2/3 years providing that it is washed carefully which it will be

Just waiting for a final price from him now but expecting around 10/11% off with no trade in as my current car is 10 years old and a CAT D now following someone running into the back of it a month ago! so intend to sell on eBay or the local motor auction as I can get more for it.  Dealer, WeBuyAnyCar etc offering £200.

Many thanks and appreciate your time.

You're buying on PCP, I presume? I'm also interested in the best way to flog an old car!

Have you read the threads about the prices available via brokers such as new car discount and coast2coast ?

Prior to your sit-down with the dealer, arm yourself with some prices from both of the above and use it as a bargaining tool. You'll probably be looking at over 20% off list price.

I couldn't get dealers to get anywhere near the same discount, and went with coast2coast in the end. Similarly others have ordered through new car discount.

Another option for selling car of that value is to simply park it on the side of a road with a for sale sign in.

I did that with an old Golf once that was rusting to bits and both front driveshafts were knackered - someone just knocked on the door one evening, didn't even want to drive it, handed over the cash, and off it went.

No ebay/auction commission that way.

Got to be worth a try ?

I have a 2.0 TDI L&K - if there's anything you want to know specifically let me know and I'll be able to help I hope!

Establish your interest in the likes of SmartLink etc, that's a hot topic of mystery betweens owners and dealers at the moment from what I can gather  :p

Hello, Paul.

You are after a Petrol car and you are in Lincs.

Do I assume your test drive will be in a Diesel car?

  • Author

Hi

Yes 'mandp' I am in Lincolnshire and it will be Petrol.  Yes the test drive is Diesel.

The car will be a straight cash purchase, dealer has already said he will not match a fleet deal which is what the 20% ones are from the brokers even though they are registered in the customers name to begin with.  Said that there is only 12% markup on the cars through the dealers at the moment hence him not looking at going much over 10%.

Thanks 'DravenSteel', I will keep you in mind.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but what are your reasons for sticking with the dealer purchase route, when you know there are better deals available ?

As you're asking the dealer to only do minimal prep, I personally don't see how the dealer is adding perhaps £2-3k's worth of value when you can get an identical car delivered to your house in the same timescale, be registered as first owner etc and still use the dealer network for warranty work ?

As I say, not trying to be argumentative, but I just can't see that buying through a dealer is worth that much extra ?

After advice from a work colleague I used a website called "Carwow". In the end I ordered from a dealer about 25 miles away although not my local, But they match the Carwow offer on PcP, which resulted in a saving of £55 per month. Carwow works by you selecting the car you want, add any extras and then safe the details or send, cant mind which. Official dealers of that make of car place "closed / unseen" bids. after which you just select which one you which. Although I am in Scotland only 1 scottish bid, bid I did receive bids from South Yorkshire, Coventry, Norfolk and Plymouth. I was saving 2 to 3 %. so while to in having to buy a 1 way train ticket. I have been around 4 different Skoda dealers have, most have small stock of the higher BHP engine in the higher spec, but nothing in the 150BHP Diesel or Petrol.

It is worth a go it cost me nothing, and I have had not 1 spam email or call either, just a happy SWMO, that is allowing my to buy a higher car with extra for the same price.

When using Carwow I asked posted for a Skoda Superb, then also a Merc A Class, Audi A3 and Q3, also a Jaguar XE. Some of the deals made me think twice. I was getting bids back overnight sometimes within the hour if I posted during working hours.

No worries, I am not actually buying the car it is being brought as a gift by my grandmother and she has insisted on it being from the local dealer rather than some anonymous online company.  To be honest, all the family also think that it is good to support the local dealer as they are a family business rather than a multi-chain etc and without them being there we would never have considered Skoda and instead stuck with Ford.  Not knocking brokers in anyway but my experience with them has not been the best whereas I have nothing but praise for the dealer, in fact he has been fantastic throughout the past 6 months even before I had narrowed down my search to Skoda and my initial looks were at an Octavia SE so the deal was initially no where near this amount.  He has also never tried to up-sell on anything, in fact he was the opposite with comments like "if it came as standard then great but not worth paying for".  On the other hand having spoken to many brokers they all seemed to give the impression that they were not bothered if I bought from them or not.   It also seemed like I was strange buying outright rather than on finance.

Thanks, I have used Carwow and given the dealer his % and also the highest % offered which he is trying to match.

Can't comment on the PCP but use something like Iron X after first wash, rinse and wash again.
