Importing cars from australia

Featured Replies

Has any one evea imported a car before? Whats the rough costs involved?

Sorry I can't help on actual costs these days, but I imported a car from Burma to the UK many years ago, and here are a few things to think about that will carry charges if it's coming by sea:

Will you need an export licence (ask folk in Country of Origin)?

Will it be deck cargo, in the hold or containered (ask the shipper - avoid deck cargo, it will rust to b*****y when you get it home)?

What price insurance in transit (on road in country of origin, on board ship, on road in UK)?

Will it attract import duty (ask HMRC)?

Will it be road legal in the UK (ask DVLA), and if not, what will it cost to fix it?

How will you get it from the dock?

You will need to appoint an agent in C of O  or in UK, i.e. someone to act in your absence if you're not with it all the way.  A good shipper can take care of most of these things - at a price.  I imagine it'd be much easier (cheaper) to import from the EU rather than outside, and simpler if it comes a short way on the back of a lorry.

Good luck with it, it can be fun :D

cheers for the info guys. Was thinking along the lines of a skoda.

Of course the other option would be to sell and then buy again in the UK.

Once you factor in all of those additional costs and the fact you're bringing in, all due respect, nothing special - probably far most cost effective to sell and buy.

That's true. Just weighing up all the pros and cons of it.

What are the pros?

I am struggling to think why, unless you like to make things difficult for yourself as a challenge of your character, you would want to do such a thing with such an ordinary car?

Howlin mad!!  :D

What if the car is bad? What do you do then? Finding justice in such case may be not the easiest task...

cheers for the info guys. Was thinking along the lines of a skoda.

But why?

Remember the ancient film "French Connection"?
