Heated Windsceen and Phone Reception

Featured Replies

Living in Scotland a heated Windscreen is a great thing to have, not just for the winter, but throughout the year on a damp day.

I was going to spec a heated screen when ordering my new car, but I've heard reports on here that the new style (metal film) will result in issues with the phone reception. I still have time to change my order, but before I do I will like to hear if anybody that has received an Superb 3 with a heated screen, what the phone reception is like, just as good as the Premium system in the Superb 2, or worse, hence why Skoda are pushing the "Phone Box". Does the phone only get affected when the screen is switch on or all the time. Hopefully not at all.

Cheers in advance

I have a heated front screen and the bluetooth phone connection to the HU in the Octavia Mk3 and the phone reception is perfectly OK

Doesn't make any difference. Remember your car is a big metal boxy anyway

Does the Octavia have the newer style heated screen or the old (visible wires) one?

I use an old iphone4s and have a heated screen and confirm that reception is excellent ( connected to Bluetooth or using as a standalone ). I sometimes put it in the flip up storage compartment on the Yeti dash just below the heated screen... No problems. I confirm the heated s screen is a great option to go for.

The heated screen found in the MKIII Superb is completely different to those found in the Yeti, MKII Superb (and waiting on confirmation about the MKIII Octavia)

"Heated windscreen Designed to quickly defrost or demist the windscreen. A thin metal-coated layer is used throughout the glass area and heats whilst the engine is running. This also reflects heat when warm outside to help keep the interior cool. Only available in combination with heated seats

I don't know what the difference is, but if I look very closely to the screen there are vertical wires that are in a 'zjg zag' pattern.

Ah that is the older style then.

AIUI the MKIII Superb is the first model to have the metal coated layer.

It is this metal coated layer that is supposed to affect the mobile phone reception (hence the ‘phone box’ option)

It is this new version of the metal coated layer in the Superb 3 that I've read about anybody have any experience of it and the quality of the phone reception

Metallised/coated screens will reduce the rf signal level through that piece of glass, but you have other windows that let the signals through so it will depend upon which direction the base station is from you. Mobile phones will hunt for the best signal continuously and switch to a neighbour cell if the signal drops below a minimum. Given the number of cells and frequency ranges now in use, there should be something available, and where you put your phone will also affect how well the aerial can 'see' incoming signals. Higher frequencies - such as those used for 4G services - are affected more severely.

I have had a metallised screen before and it clobbered GPS receivers so requiring an external (to the device) aerial to be used. BMW helpfully put three rf 'apertures' into their screens of the right size.

My Dealer told me on Friday that the 'phone box' option could not be ordered at present if a quick delivery was wanted.

Where can I read about this new type of heates windscreen?

Any updates on this? Perhaps a current owner who has the heated screen can give us their thoughts on the reception? I've asked my dealer to add it (this icy cold morning was a nightmare with the Fabia).

Well that was a bit of waste of time phone Skoda customer services.

I emails them on this topic at the start of the week, no reply. I phone on Wednesday evening and was told they will get back to me.

I received an email this afternoon, stating that "if I require an update on my build date to contact me dealer". So I phoned them again this afternoon only to be told that no car will be delivered with a fault, what was that about.

When pressed the gent advise me that all skoda cars are tested to ensure their safety. So still no answer.

When I asked again his reply was that I should contact my service provider.

I must have accidentally been put through to their legal time to get these answers.

So help could anybody that has a car with a heated screen, make a call from the car and let the good people of "Briskoda" know.

Thanks guys (and lassies)

Tried it tonight

Heated windscreen on

Phone sat on seat (not in phone box)

Phone reception appeared as clear as normal

thanks Infinite,

i will get my order amended.

If phone reception is to drop off due to the screen, it will be a directional problem and only if there is one mast to use directly ahead of you.

That will not be a problem for 95% of the populous who have an abundance of phone towers for their phones to connect to.

For those in remoter locations such as the highlands and parts of wales, it might be a slight issue. As for me, zero ppl (bar my wife) call me so I have little to worry about.

However, if your jobs runs through your phone, then yes I can see your point & how it could impact your days work. Very valid and also very difficult to test.

Best of luck

Folks,

Skoda have emailed a reply when I was on holiday, seems that the phone should be as comment above ok with the heated windscreen.

"Thank you for your email. I apologise for the delay in my response.

I have discussed your comments with our Technical Support Team who advised that the phone reception works through the aerial;
the signal for the mobile depends on which area you are driving through. If a portable satellite navigation unit is stuck to the
front windscreen that will cause interference.

Thank you once again for taking the time to write to us. I hope I have clarified matters for you; however, if you have any
further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards"
