Rear Discs & Pads

Featured Replies

I stuck the car in for its service today - I said don't bother to phone (as they always do...) about new discs and pads - however, lunchtime today my mobile duly rang and I got the hard sell about replacing the rear discs and pads (also mentioned the fronts even though I've only covered 8,400 miles since they were replaced...) - when I do get them replaced it won't be at the dealer - not at 250 quid anyway. Also quoted 90 quid a corner for Kumho tyres. I know this is all old hat but it does get a bit wearing going through this every service :sigh: .

I know what you feel like, for a while VW used to, I think, give me advisories for worn brake pads when they were just about 50% worn and the official MOT material thickness requirement is a ridiculous " 2 X nothing" - well roughly!

Seat keep reporting a rear wheel dragging on the Ibiza when I get it serviced (owned by daughter but I'm looking after it while she is abroad) "book it in now and we will look at it"  - no thanks I already do the brakes myself, then I check both rear wheels - free as they can be, very annoying, reporting faults or potential faults is good as they don't know if you know about them or can sort, but telling small lies - a bit naughty!

Hopefully at next service they will see that I've replaced the front discs/pads and de-rusted the rear drums, which should also mean that I've had the drums off and cleaned up the rear brakes in general - I will see in January!

I had exactly the same thing at my last service, front and rear discs excessively corroded apparently.

Had them looked over by my trusted mechanic and he said they were absolutely fine with little to no signs of wear or corrosion, it also flew through the MOT.

Goes to show they have full confidence in their quality OE products.

It could be worse, you might have a Mk3 Octavia and they would say your discs were fine, just a little cosmetic rust.

That's terrible!

My fabia vRS is now over 50,000 miles, has done numerous track days, Is two and a half years old, and my OE rear brakes are fine, I would estimate about 50% worn... should see 100k.

Oh, and I forgot to ask them not to wash it as a ) they never make a very good job of it (had to wash the wheels myself this morning)  b ) whatever cheap air freshener they use is absolutely honking (ate a McDonald's breakfast in the car this morning to get rid of it) and c) the stereo settings get messed up - I'll need to find BT again.

What's interesting is an 'Additional Work' form which includes a section called 'Lost Sale Information' - not sure they actually meant to give me this - no wonder, £120 for a Pirelli (even at Kwik Fit they're only £90) and £60 for alignment (my local place, Performance Tyres, does it for £30) - I appreciate dealers have higher costs but they don't half rip it on some items (reasonable servicing costs to lure you in and then target the less informed motorist - or the company car man who doesn't care).

The rear discs and pads don't do very much do they? I had a look and the rear discs are in a bit of a two 'n' eight (they're five years old) - just wondering whether to replace or hold off - if I do replace now I'd imagine it won't be too long before the new ones start showing signs of corrosion - car isn't in daily use and is garaged (although garaged or not seems to make little or no difference).

I always do my own brakes on the car and buy my tyres of the Internet and then I get them fitted, I save loads
