Fabia MKIII Tyre Size.....

Featured Replies

Mrs Goldfingers Fabia MKIII Se-L came with 215/45/16 tyres, replacements are limited and expensive

There is only one tyre listed in that size for Winter tyres on Mytyres Web Site.

SO:--

Can we fit 205/45/16 tyres instead, the difference is 1.5 %.

Your thoughts please.

Sorry George, my mistake I meant All Seasons.

One tyre a Dunlop at £ 125 each.

My dealers telling me 185/60/ r15 will do the job on steel wheels .

I'm looking to put the car on All seasons, 215/45/16 or 205/45/16  ( came on 215/45/16 as standard )

The Maxxis AP2 or Vredestein Quatrac3 will be fine in 205/50 R 17,  the later with Rim Protection.

Or see just what a local Fitter can offer you, if anything.

205 50 is the best alternate tyre for 16"s.

As above, same for Polo SEL - though I'd like to think that I could go for 195/55 r15 as I intend to use the winters (Alpins) for 6 months, though I've bought (ebay) 15 alloys that will happily accept 195 tyres. Reason for using winter tyres for 6 months is to cover the wet seasons as well - though you might say that means 12 months a year!  In wife's previous Polo 9N, I bought 14" steels but got them fitted with 185 tyres which again were "one size" up from "best width in winter", and they performed very well.

I'd think that car manufacturers do fit cars with the correct width of summer tyres and because they need to give advice on correct width of winter tyres, they play safe and quote the best width for winter use in the worst conditions, what I have done in the past, and maybe again with this car, is to take the view that I intend to use these tyres beyond the official winter period (as above) so I might just go "one size" up - the only thing is, all tyre manufacturers and tyre suppliers give only one size for these cars for winter tyres, and that one size is 185/60 X R15.

The All New 2015 Skoda Fabia never got new Type Approval, it is on the same type approval as the previous Fabia, Fabia Mk2

& Fabia Mk2 Face lift.

The Wheels as used now, even though 215 Tyres might be fitted that the Mk2 Fabia did not get, have the same Type Approval covering

them as the previous models & wheels.

Skoda / VW / Audi / Seat that are Manufacturers on Mainland Europe have many things on the cars they build that are EU Type Approved,

and then different Markets in Different countries get different set ups.

If you are running a Fabia in different parts of the UK in winter you might well have different needs from those in Germany, Sweden, Denmark or Cyprus.

The Skoda / VW Owners manual is lots gets lost in Translation. Or just no thought is given to drivers of Right Hand Drive cars in

countrys that are not Germany, Czech Republic or Spain.

Fit safe tyres on safe wheels of the type and size that are good for you use and that UK Insurance Underwriters are happy with.

Summer tyres of the size on a Filler Flap in Winter weather might not work as well as appropriate tyres of the correct type.

Be sure your Speedo gives you an accurate reading or reads over the speed you are doing and not under-reads.

Check with GPS / Sat Nav or what ever.

That is the bit I bother about most due to most insurance companies not really bothered, when asked about this, but in the event of an incident, the local assessor probably has a different take on things and would fall back on "car manufacturer's stated advice"  - which, in my case of using 15" wheels really means 185/60  - I will probably make the effort and ask the question about using a non standard size, I might even end up talking to someone that knows and cares!

A Vehicle Examiner , Loss Adjuster or Crash Investigator / DVSA (VOSA/ Police) will look for Type Approved and tested Wheels, and Tyres

of the appropriate Type, Speed / Load Rating in good legal condition and if they were at the correct pressures, or in the range.

It happens all, the time, it has done for years.

None of it is Rocket Science.

Stretched tyres that somehow get deemed as being legal are just weird.  IMHO.

I know it is not rocket science and know if in doubt "don't! - just use the size suggested by manufacturer" - but it is tempting to go with the slightly wider winter tyre size, maybe on the grounds of vanity/aesthetics - poor reasons!

Also there is "legal" and "not illegal"  - which might be where some of the stretched tyres get left alone,  it is the fact that the car manufacturer who should be seen as the design authority has not included the "195/55 X R15" that in my case should make me avoid them, although I think some Bluemotion, as in model, did leave the factory with 195/55 R15 on special streamlined alloys.

I don't think that I've make a sensible case for choosing 195/55 X R15 though, I'll stop now!

Why dont you buy new complete wheels, 15" and narrower? Standard steel are not that expensive, so as the rubber will be cheaper too. They'll cut through snow and slush much better than wide tires.

Sorry George, my mistake I meant All Seasons.

One tyre a Dunlop at £ 125 each.

I am thinking of putting Wrs Goldfingers car on All season Tyres. The car came from the factory with 215/45/16 tyres. I can ony find one All season Tyre on Mytyres and that is a Dunlop selling for £125 each. The question I'm asking is can I run the car on 205/45/16 All Season tyres as there is far more choice and prices are a lot cheaper. I dont want to drop the car onto 15 inch steel rims.

Yes you can put on 205/45 R16 instead of the 215/45 R16.

But the tyres by the sizes might be slightly less Total Diameter & Circumference.

The thing is, that in actual measurement side by side they might actually be much the same size.

Or just the difference between Ooo & Ahh.

215 and 205 is the width of the tyre, and that can include the rim protector,

so it is not always actually how much tread there is on the road.

the 215 might have no Rim Protector and the 205 might, or might not.

45 is 45% of 215,  or 205 so the sidewall height.

When you compare a 205/45 R 16 of one brand & type   ie All Season.

it may be the same height as a 215/45 R 16 Summer Tyre.

Best pull into a Tyre Fitting Centre and see what tyres they have and look at

205/45 R 16,  next to a 205/50 R16 if they have any in stock.

*Put a new tyre / tyres next to the 215/45 R 16 that is on the car and see the difference in size, if any.*

If the price is not right,

make your excuses and leave.

The joys of running a 1930 Austin 7 on 3" x 19" tyres is but a memory.

. . and they were great in snow!
