Rear window demister switch light bulb replacement

Featured Replies

Hi,

The indicator bulb within the rear window demister switch on my 1999 Felicia has blown - not the warning lamp on the dashboard, but the light within the switch itself.

Is there an easy way to remove the switch to replace the bulb? I've heard tales of having to disconnect the speedo cable or worse, but surely just to get to the switch shouldn't involve such dismantling - or am I just over optimistic :notme:

Any advice really welcome. If it's such a big job then I'll live without the illuminated switch....

Thanks, Sympol

PS. I'm in Sweden so this is a left hand drive car - the switch in question is in a bank of several including hazard warning switch etc. to the right of the steering wheel below the air vents and above the heater controls...

You can skip to post 8 to find the location of all the hidden screws!

As ninjacj said, getting access to the rear window heater switch is fairly well described in that topic. Except maybe the extra step of taking off two long securing pins and squeeze / push the switch towards the iinterior of the car. Not the easiest job for a beginner. The really fiddly job is dismantling the switch itself to get access to the bulb, remove it, solder the new bulb (or LED), then everything in reverse order.

Taking the speedo cable out of the gearbox is not a legend. It isn't the end of the world either. It is just a matter of removing a screw. The scary part is that the burnt bulb is inside a switch, the switch is fixed in a dashboard bezel, the dashboard bezel has the instrument cluster attached that needs to be removed, the instrument cluster can't get out unless you remove the speedo cable plugged in the back, and the speedo cable needs to be disconnected from the gearbox. Yeah... :wall:

If you still want to do that yourself, be very pacient and have some miniature picks handy. I have descriptive photos prepared in case you get stuck.

I changed mine to blue leds if your handy with a soldering iron RainbowFire knows what I do if you want I could send you one for the price off postage trust me it's probably quicker....

Hi all!

Thanks for the replies - sorry for the late reply - I thought I would get an email to notify if someone replied, but no, I was mistaken so have only just checked in again.

Ricardo, those LEDs look impressive, certainly worth thinking about if I get around to taking out the switches.

At this stage I think I'll leave it , as it's just the one switch that doesn't light up and I know where it is in the dark anyway. As I rely on the car to get me to work each day and have no other alternative means of transport (no buses out here in the forest) I'll leave it until either I have another reason to remove the cluster or after I retire in a couple of months and am not so dependent on having transport.

Thanks again for those who took the time to help a newbie Skoda owner and again apologies for the late reply

Regards, Robin

You get notified only if you specify it. In some cases the notification ends in your spam folder due to an overzealous spam filter.

Any Swedish forum dedicated to Felicia?

I really admire it. if you please show me how you did it identifying how to test them outside the car

I followed the wiring diagrams and a 12V power supply of course.

If you please send me the wiring diagram of the instrument and switches.

Many thanks for your help
