Cruise Control Failure Oddity

Featured Replies

I've a bit of an odd problem with my cruise control.

If I start the car, and just drive, it works fine, and can be turned on and off, speed increased etc.

At any point in the journey:

If I indicate left, it still works fine

If I indicate right using only the comfort indicators, it still functions as normal.

If I flick the indicator to indicate right, if the CC is on, it cuts it off.

Now for the rest of the journey, the CC is inactive and it cannot be set or resumed.

If I'm not using CC and indicate right, it also kills it for the rest of the journey.

If I stop and restart it works fine until I indicate right.

VCDS scan brings up the following:

00895 - Cruise Control Switch (E45)
            014 - Defective - Intermittent

If I clear this, as soon as I indicate right it comes back.

Doing an output test on VCDS shows the buttons and rocker switch all function all the time, and the car knows which buttons are being pressed.

Will cleaning the contacts on the switch solve this, or is it more likely a new stalk required?

I've seen that, but it doesn't sound like the usual contacts problem.

It always works, with all buttons functioning until I indicate right.

Might we worth giving the contacts a clean though, It might be the problem, sounds like its only a ten minute job

Could it be the contacts where the stalk meets the steering column

Said this a few times now. The contacts that are causing this issue are mostly the ones on the small circuit board the ones at the end where they slip into the connector block in the stalk. I put a sliver of solder on these on both sides of the small circuit board, reassembled it and have not had an issue since.

I use my cruise control on a daily basis as I travel as a maintenance person and probably use it on average 20 times daily on the days that I am driving for work.

And I soldered mine a few years ago now. This has proved itself.

I would take a photo if I weren't so busy. Seriously, try it, anyone that has intermittent problems with their CC.

If you just wiggle this connection the CC will probably start working again without even cleaning it, as when cleaning it you are doing this action by removing it anyway. :)

So I got a chance to clean the contacts on the CC board, and as I suspected, it made no difference.

I'm guessing it's the connection at the bottom of the stalk where it connects to the steering column, as now it stops working if I indicate left or right.

Does the cowling just unscrew, or is there a knack to getting it off?

Perhaps it's a safety feature, It thinks you are going to turn right so automatically switches it off for you, Lol. Sorry. :) .

It could still be the contacts as mentioned in post 5.
