Tyres

Featured Replies

My dads Fabia is running 205/45r16 tyres, and my octivia is running 205/55r16 tyres. Has any one made the switch from 205/45r16 to 205/55r16 tyres at all?
Any one had problems at all?

cheers Jev. Im looking at it from a cost point of view. Ive got a set of michalins on my car. There £50 cheaper than the ones from the same make!

205/55 is more common size than 205/45. That means:

1) you will find more tyres with the needed size;

2) they might be cheaper. Exclusive sizes usually are more expensive.

Of course, there are lots of tyres and their sizes differ. Maybe for 205/45 you will find nice tyres and maybe even cheaper than for 205/55. You never know... Just checked several tyres I was interested in this year. None of them was sized 205/45.

The switch from what to where?

you realise there is 1.6" (almost 40mm) difference in diameter? So the speedo will be really wrong, the odometer will be really wrong, it will probably scrape on the bodywork when you go around corners and assuming you mean fitting 205/55r16 to a fabia, the Fabia will accelerate like you've pulled a spark plug lead off as the gearing will be a bit high.

This doesn't even take into account that you are probably contravening the local regulations on what tyre can be fitted to the car & also the insurance implication of making a significant modification to the vehicle.

If you are looking for an alternative to 205/45r16 then you might consider a 215/45r16 or a 195/50r16 - they are within 2% of the original diameter and should work without an issue.
