Access query

Featured Replies

Unintentional pun! Right, I've a problem with our database at work. We have an Access database set up with a front end on the client machines and a back end on the server. When you log into the database you join an Access workgroup. The problem we are experiencing is that if more than one user logs in, any searches slow to a crawl. We've only experienced this since changing our server setup. The original server setup was a single PIII 886 with 512Mb of RAM, two mirrored 9.1 Gb HDD with all the operating system and the data on these drives. Ran Windows Server 2000. New setup is a twin PIII 600 with 1.8GB of RAM and 5 18.2 Gb HDD. First two mirrored holding the OS, the other three RAID 5 containing the data. Now running SBS 2003.

Any ideas? If anyone needs more info, let me know.

Thanks

Alan

Alan,

Do they map drives to the linked tables or use a path directly?

If mapped drives, is it mapped via Ip address or server name? - seems to be an issue on Server 2003 in some cases.

Is DNS working correctly within the network?

Are the permissions correct on the server for all users to access it?

Is the network card OK?

Have you excluded the files from any anti-virus products?

Lots of things it could be, just start working through a list and you will narrow it down eventually!

Paul..

Use UNC paths, not mapped drives, also a good way of speeding up things like this is to put an entry in the hosts file so there is no slowdown due to DNS lookup.
