Engine revving very high (only when driving)

Featured Replies

So today I was driving to work.. and when I was going down the bypass I noticed that my car is holding the revs on it's own as if it were on cruise control. When I put the clutch in, it revs all the way round. Eventually after about a mile, my speedo stopped working and my console lit up like a christmas tree and beeped at me. I do not have this problem when the car is idling at all, only when I am driving.

When I tested the car for fault codes I was given the code of P0600 which I have been told could be anything from low battery voltage to a fried ECU. This interested me as I have air ride and recently the compressors haven't been getting as much power as they used to and my lights have been a lot less powerful then they were.. but I am not sure if this could cause anything to do with the revving issue I am having?

sounds like the turbo has failed and the engines revving from the engine oil.

Check the engine oil to see if its dropped or low and let us know, could be somthing els but im not sure what!

I have checked the engine oil. No drop in the oil. No smoke at all from the car. Still boosts hard when I am driving and no revving issues when the car is idle. Confusing me it is haha.

Just had a Skoda Technician tell me that it's because im running different size wheels on the front to the rear. As my rears have stretched tyres on them. Simple fix that I would never have thought of!

so because you have stretched tyres, when you put your cluth down the engines revs really high by itself?

What a load of bull**** haha

Measure battery voltage directly across the battery posts before and after starting the engine.

Tell us where this Skoda Technician works so we can avoid...

Different sized tyres on front and back will confuse the ECU, make the warning lamps come on and may limit revs under load since it thinks the wheels are spinning.

Wino. Or WIDEO lol

what?

Possible multiple problems.

If you can sort out running on an "even" set of wheels and tyres for a while that might help eliminate some of the symptoms.

Get the battery checked out or at least charged. Check for the "alternator signal wire" threads on this sub-foum (and on SETCupra-net).

Have heard of engine runaways due to oil ingestion. This tends to be fatal (to everything mechanical) unless it's turned off and the ASV closes.

On later model cars, 2006/7 the throttle pedal can go on the fritz. Not read of it causing very high revs though.

Agreed, with the note that "different size" means rolling radius and not just tread width.

I'd start by checking voltage across battery terminals engine off, engine on and steering straight ahead, and with PAS on full lock.

I'm half-expecting to not get 14.4v engine on, and lower voltage on lock than straight ahead.

If this is the case, then check the sense wire as already discussed, and suspect the alternator, particularly given the extra loads from your air ride.

I think there is a misunderstanding here, I believe the OP means that in-gear and under load the engine will not rev properly but if he dips the clutch it will.

That doesn't mean that the engine is faulty in some way, merely that the OP is an ambiguous communicator.

The fault is electronic and probably caused as previously stated by a combination of incorrectly sized tyres and possible battery/charging issues.

First step is to put a standard sized set of four wheels and tyres on it and see what problems go away.

Second step is to record the battery voltage prior to starting the engine and again once the engine is running.

Just to let you all know that this was fixed by changing my wheels to all of the correct tyre sizes and profiles etc. Having the rear wheels different size to the front was causing the car to freak out and rev itself to compensate for not being able to gather a true speed reading.
