Choosing a petrol engine

Featured Replies

Hi fellas,

Since my furby is in a pretty good shape and it's pretty cheap to run and maintain, I'm looking to buy another one. So a good friend of mine told me he will get here 3 of them from an auction in Germany. Will be an estate and 2 hatchbacks, one of them with a 1.2 engine and less miles, the other 2 are Elegance, 1.4 16v engines but with 250.000 miles. I'm concerned about that 1.2 engine, because it's a bit cheaper and it was less stressed IMHO, but I've seen there are 3 different types. Which ones are better and which ones are worse? Should I stay away from them / some of them ? Are there any known issues ?

How many miles has your current car covered? Why change it? Or is this an additional car, rather than a replacement?

The main difference between the 1.2 engines is the number of valves and corresponding maximum power figures , 6-valve=54bhp, 12-valve=64bhp.

1.4/16v engines with 250000 miles? I would say 'well proven and thoroughly run-in engine'. Most people would say "250000 miles, on a petrol engine? Jesus, that's surely about to die!"

Have either had any re-building in their histories, do you know?

Oh, I'm not replacing it. I'm buying a second one. I'm concerned about how reliable they are. My 1.4 mpi has ~ 120.000miles. I can't tell about their service history.

Bump? Any pro's and con's for each engine type? I will be servicing it well, no matter which option I will take, but is anyone of those as reliable as the 1.4 mpi?

the 1.4 16v AUB & BBZ are pretty good.....I had the AUB...............needs the timing belts & tensioners doing every 40,000miles.............also needs to run on good petrol 98ron.....................if they start & sound smooth & rev freely up to 6000rpm they should be fine for that mileage.............if they had not been looked after they would have gone boom before then.............
