Yet another rear view camera install

Featured Replies

As quite a few of you already have, I've just added a RVC to my car but took a slightly different route to most so this is just to document it and give others ideas.

I didn't want to need to cut the tailgate to fit either the larger OEM Tiguan/Golf handle or the Scirocco version in a separate mount. I also wanted to avoid any third party PAL/NTSC -> RGB convertors which ruled out most aftermarket cameras.

Instead, I grabbed both a cheap Audi A1 RVC (~£10) which happens to be the correct size to fit in the O2 boot handle hole and a OEM Tiguan lowline RVC kit (~£70) and got creative. I haven't got pictures before I started but both items are easy to find online.

Camera from the Audi A1 handle (composite out) with some terrible soldering

The OEM camera from the Tiguan kit was somewhat more impressive

Even after much trimming of plastics it was going to be a tight fit in it's new home so the connectors had to come off between the two boards

Next stage was fitting it in the Audi A1 housing and adding some protection from the elements

Finally, all reassembled ready to be fitted

Fitting to the car was pretty simple in concept but more entertaining trying to run cables along the cars length. The kit contained a RGB video cable from the camera to the head unit and a second cable to power it. Loosely based on a stock Scirocco install, I've taken a new fused (5A) 12v feed from the dash side fuse box, a ground point at the side of the boot and finally tapped into a reverse light.

Final issues are that the Audi A1 handle is slightly taller so a gasket is required to fill the gap on the inside of the boot lid and that the connector for the boot release is different. Both minor issues and I can confirm once fitted (and coded) everything works as you'd expect.
