First impressions 280 SE L Combi

Featured Replies

No I've only done 68 miles. Have to say though that I have absolutely no interest in mpg so won't be keeping track of it.

Two questions Nick.

The 6-speed DSG has more than 1 set of internal gear ratios, the 220 has the wide ratio set giving about 63 / 65  mph at 2K rpm in 6th, but I believe that your 280 might

have the the close ratio set, giving about 51 / 53 mph at 2K rpm.

Any thoughts on which set-up is fitted to your car...........?

As for fuel consumption, perhaps you could take a peek at the long term consumption when you've done 300 miles or so?

Hi David ! If I get a chance tomorrow I'll have a run down the bypass to test the ratios.

As for fuel yes of course ! Trouble is it will probably not be very representative.... The cars normal day trip is just enough to get the oil upto temp.

Just over 3 miles to work and the same back up and down hills in stop start traffic. Plus the engines tight plus I'll be keeping it below 4.5k revs.

Fuel consumption on my Superb s averaging about 35 mpg, but most of it's trips are 20+ miles, if I use it for shopping it's maybe 27 mpg for a 12 mile round-trip.

Since I'm far too old to be working,... ....., I don't have any regular daily driving, & I don't even use the car every week!

As for the DSG gearing, it's of interest to me 'cos both our Skoda's have the close-ratio box whereas my EOS has 'the wide-ratio setup.

Driving the EOS on familiar roads is surprisingly different. in "D" it won't select 6th under 50 mph &  in town traffic 4th is as high it will go.

They've all been remapped so there's plenty of low-down torque, but I'll wager that your 280 lump would wipe the floor against them, especially since you have 4WD.

Enjoy your new wheels & keep us all informed, I'm really glad you like the car.

Nick does the car(its a beauty by the way) have adaptive dampers, they say on comfort mode they ride like an old citroen, lovely for 80 miles of m4 everyday, sport for the other 10;when i get the car that is! If you have, any good? Car manufactures and motoring mags seem to be hell bent on a cars whipping round corners like there on rails,in doing so riding like a camel, like the bmws ive had, bone shakers! If you dont have the dampers does she ride well? And the car!! Kevin

Hi Kev ! No I didn't spec the dampers. Plan is to keep the car longer than 5 years so wanted to mitigate any possible large bills !

I'd strongly suggest testing the dcc as the effect is very subjective.

Comming from BMW I personaly did not fancy softer/rolling cornering (which is bad by default) and potholes were not that softer in comfort (tested on old stone road, switching between modes). I'd even dare to say that difference in bad surface damping is kinda hard to notice in normal vs comfort (my attraction to dcc), so I did not spec one either.

Airmatic (air springs) on new c class is a different story though :) Sadly in a similar spec 48000eur vs 32000...

Just been for that test run.... With the cruise set at 60 the cars doing just a gnats over 2k revs.

Thanks Nick, very useful info. Should be much more economical...............

Got a rest drive booked for Friday, (diesel of course...) to see if we fit a S3 into our garage.

Sorry and to confirm it was in 6th at that ! :-)

That seems awfully high revs at that speed for a car of that performance.

My 2.0L 170 diesel is up over 70mph at 2K.

I don't understand why they would give it that gearing in 6th??

Dunno but it's lovely and quiet at 2k. Doesnt feel like it's revving its proverbials off or strained. I wonder if they put a 1.4 in by mistake .... :-D

Your diesel will have a higher ratio final drive as it'll be out of puff by 4K.... The 280 will keep pulling closer to 6k or 7k.

Thanks DC great post !

Great post and totally correct on point 2. Sadly gearing and fuelling these days is totally done around (flawed) emissions testing rather than what is best for the car or driver.

I guess that's the difference between a higher overall revving petrol and lower revving diesel.

My Superb 2 FL diesel is doing 1800rpm at 70mph, the wife's BMW diesel is doing just over 1500rpm at 70mph. Makes for a really relaxed cruise.

Nick_H, lovely car you have there.
