Rusty Hubs - best way to repair?

Featured Replies

Hey peeps

As the title suggests my Octy VRS has the dreaded 'burnt' effect on all four hubs. I swear every time I look at them through my lovely TWS Black Chrome alloys I see David Dickinson's face looking back at me :D

Whilst I appreciate this is common place for an aged car and is probably quite an easy DIY job, I haven't the tools for the task so was wondering would I be expected to pay silly money to say, have a garage do it for me?

is it just a case of whacking some Hammerite on then job done?

I'm hoping this isn't too stupid a question but I feel that this really spoils the look of the car. Do most people here just sort it themselves?

Thanks.

If you mean the part of the brake disc that is not swept clean by the pads then Silver Hammerite does the job for me - I do it when I put the Alloys on in spring. I use steelies in Winter so not worth the bother.

Or just buy genuine discs (or pagid) instead of the usual cheap crap. They are painted so dont rust in the 1st place

Are we talking discs or hubs, the OP mentions the hubs.

Genuine discs or not, they won't stop the hub rusting.

Many brand new cars sat on forecourts with corroded hubs...

Pagid discs on mine, fronts fitted 2 years ago & rears a year ago, both hubs rusty now.

Thats a BMW (just saying).. he was refering to discs not hubs. My last car was a mk6 golf.. bought it (last year) with 60k 59 plate and it still had the original discs on (full vw history no mention of discs) not a spec of rust.. buy cheap.. get rust.. genuine ftw ;)

I think he's referring to the top hat on the rotor.

Wire brush and paint something on - either spray or brush.  From 2+ metres away nobody will notice any brush strokes

mattvrestate.......By "Hubs" he means the rusty part of the brake disc that isnt in contact with the pads (like the bmw picture). ,My original discs were very rusty in the "Hub" area when i replaced them (even genuine discs rust :p ),best way is as brad 1.8T says, rub down & paint.
