Looking at buying a 1.4tsi

Featured Replies

I have tried using the search function, but typing 1.4 tsi in the search bar makes it throw a hissy and wont show any results.

So, I'm going to look at a 2011 elegance 1.4tsi hatchback in light green (cant find the colour) This is because my car got hit and written off (steering and suspension damage)

Is there anything specific to look out for with these engines? Any owners able to give their opinion on the engine, is it underpowered for the size of the car, or does it do the job sufficiently?

Still really gutted about the loss of my car as it was basically a sorted car and I think I will miss the power. But having a 6 month old daughter, going for a cheaper to run (tax, insurance and fuel) car seems a sensible thing to do.

Anyone got an Octavia in green that I can see?

TIA.

I've found the same problem searching for 1.4tsi

Great engine to drive! I own a 2014 Superb 1.4tsi and it tugs that bigger car along suprisingly well. Just toured Europe with a fully laden car - it coped with the German Autobahns really well.   Obviously it's not a VRS though

The engine pulls OK from 1500 rpm (not as well as the diesel) but then really turns up the steam after 4000 rpm all the way through 6000 rpm. 3rd is a great overtaking gear where you can pass without having to change gear - my deisel was not as good at this as it ran out of puff at 4000rpm. 6th gear very tall for a small petrol (60mpg = 2000rpm) but it is very useable and extremely refined at british motorway speeds.

If you drive reasonably smoothly it can be very economical. In Europe my worst tank to tank was 45mpg - best was 53 mpg (I use higher octane fuel) - this included some high speed cruising. It has not required any oil yet - still at top of dipstick after 8000 miles

Earlier engines had timing chain issues especially the more powerful twin charger (turbo + supercharger), piston / oil jet problems although this didn't affect the lower power version as much (which the Octavia is). 2009/10 were the worst years - later much better with revisions to timing chains/tensioner, pistons and oil jets(cools pistons but caused escessive oil consumption). Check for rattling noises other than for the first second after starting from cold(This is normal - also don't confuse with direct injection noise , also normal)

Most direct injection engines (including diesels & petrols , petrol worse though for some reason - inc VRS) can suffer from carbon on the valves depending on engine management, crankcase ventilation design and how it is driven  (However Inlet manifold very accessible if they ever need cleaning/walnut blasting). This is because with direct injection you don't have petrol washing over the valves.

Thats the bad , now the good:-

>Single Mass Flywheel  (google DMF problem)

>Externally mounted slave cylinder (some other manual engines have the concentric version that needs gearbox renewal to fix )

>Water cooled turbo

>Water pump fed by auxilary belt (the diesel waterpumps are fed by the cambelt)

>No DPF or adblue

>This engine is very popular with engine tuners/chippers the plasma coated bores being especially robust

Looking after engine:-

>This engine benefits from very regular oil changes with the correct long life oil - always pre-fill oil filter

>When coolant changed ensure thourougly bled - hot spots can cause problems

> Never turn engine backwards! - Be careful parking on hills, only leave in a gear that would turn the engine forwards in the car rolled down the hill (1st pointing down, reverse pointing up)

What an answer. Thank you.

I bought a 1.4tsi (122hp) last year after my 2.0 litrs diesel became costly to keep repairing.

I was sceptical, but anticipated doing much less mileage and thought I would go back to petrol because of the DPF problems being reported, (after 15 years of diesels)..and I have not been dissapointed...fantastic engine. In most circumstances / normal driving you do not notice much difference in the driving experience..the 1.4 pulls really well from 1500 rpm..(you would notice it if the car was fully loaded). I also tow a small caravan and it copes adequately. When I first had it I monitored actual fuel consumption over several tanks and it returns about 45 mpg, (a bit better than the old diesel), but can get 50mpg+ on the "trip", (about 98% accurate) if you try.....and the lack of engine noise / vibration is amazing..I keep thinking the engine has stopped!....

..so in short I can highly recommend one...I really wanted an elegance but could only find an SE, but generally happy with that spec. I do not think  would want one of the higher HP versions as I have heard they can have mechanical problems...

...test drive one...you will be impressed...

Tested an 2011 elegance estate and was pretty impressed. Car was listed as a hatchback, but I think the estate looks better than the hatchback.

Car was also a higher spec than advertised, and got it for less than 8k. So really happy.

I've got a 2012 1.4Tsi Se. Great car.  My last car was a petrol 1.8 Mondeo.  The 1.4Tsi pulls far better low down than the Mondeo. The Mondeo was better for acceleration higher up the rev range.  THe 1.4Tsi has great driveability though, overall better than the Mondeo.  Economy usually mid 40s.  On relaxed A road driving around 50mpg. I've had 53.

I'm 105 kg and the engine is fine with me, my wife, adult daughter, dog, and full boot going on holiday. I test drove the 1.2 Tsi and felt it lacked a bit of pull 3 up on the motorway.

Good driving position. The Mondeo gave me a stiff lower back after 200 or 300 miles on the motorway. The Octavia seat feels a bit firm and not as "comfy" as the Mondeo but I can drive to Glasgow to Cambridge and my back is fine.

Drawbacks - I miss the heated winscreen on the Mobdeo. Road noise is worse than the Mondeo on the original Bridgestone Turanzas 195/65. I'm replacing them tomorrow with Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen 2s which are rated about 3Db quieter so I'll see if that helps.  If you are road testing try and find some rough chipseal surfaces. Noise is OK on smooth tarmac but getting towards intolerable on rough surfaces.

I would be interested to see how the Vector 4 season G2's perform and how quiet they really are

Yay - managed to eventually get the spiritmonitor mileage icon working
