Front grill removal

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Literally just picked up my Octavia vrs today.

Wanting to swap the front grill to this one on super skoda - http://www.superskoda.com/Skoda/OCTAVIA-III/Octavia-III-front-grille-in-OEM-honeycomb-design-KI-R

I've had a quick look on the forum and can only find posts that say the whole bumper needs to be removed in order to change the grill. Seems quite extreme for a grill!

Really don't fancy doing that with all the parking sensors electrics etc.

Has anyone else found a different way to change this?

Thanks in advanced! :)

No it's deffo a bumper off job.

I've heard that you can break the front grill off & refit the new grill without having to take off the front bumper, someone might be able to confirm this & maybe be able to tell you exactly how it's done

Yes, you have first to break down the wider chrome clips in the bottom of the grill. After that you can bend the grill forward. When you get some air, you just bend it off, it breaks up about 7 to 10 pieces. When all is off, just plug in the new black grill. It takes about 30 mins.

Does anyone have any instructions on this? Photos or video maybe?

Thanks

that's for the grille surround, not the whole grille IIRC.

+1 yes you can get the grille surround trim off by breaking off the old one into a dozen pieces but the main upper grille is welded to the front bumper. To fit that superskoda one you will have to cut the original one off and to make a proper job plastic weld the new one back onto the bumper.

look on ebay there are some good photos of the bumper from people selling salvage ones give you an idea

Sorry, misreading.

You can buy good bumber removal instructions with pictures from erWIN: https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz

The right manual is: D4B802D18D7-Body_Work.pdf.

Thanks guys, still unsure what to do now :(. Might even take it somewhere to get it fitted. Don't fancy damaging a brand new car!

Or you could just download it from the link in post #39 and #42 in the sticky  "Mk3 Owners + Workshop Manual info" above

I have the set for mine off erWin and they are good but for something generic those are fine give you a feel for whether you want to spend the money (not that its a huge amount of cash either way)

I'm thinking of replacing chrome surround with a black one. Can't you just remove top four screws (top pic, Xpower post Posted 27 April 2014) and pull grill forward to unclip the surround, thus not destroying it to remove? Then just push fit the replacement.

For clarity, I assume Jimmy's referring to the following post:

Was looking at the weekend. ..you can see 4 silver tabs of the grille through the holes in the grille.

Isn't it a case of releasing these with a screwdriver and it should pop off?

This forum could do with a DIY guides section.

Just for jokes, my dealer quoted me £181 plus VAT today to fit one, although the cost of the trim is forty quid.

Is it that simple to do myself?

Buy the grille from superskoda then have a look at the clips. Look to be around 6 holding it around the grille.

If you look around your grille you can see them through the holes. A long screwdriver should be able to prise them lose.

I can see them. Do you push them down, or pull them up? I can get to 4 of the bottom ones with my fingers.

(apologies, I should have posted this on a thread about the actual grille surround, not the whole lot)

How about getting a big sheet of 3M wrap of ebay and wrapping the grille on the car.

Its got a good edge so should be easy to cut and push the wrap over the edges.

I'm asking about the vRS lower grille - does it simply pull out, like on lesser Octavias? And the two side dummy grilles too?  (The other Octavias need the two parts around the foglamps pulling off first - the vRS looks different.

Thanks.

I replaced my chrome grill surround with a black one from Superskoda this morning.

It took no more than 10 minutes (had to be brave and destroy the chrome one getting it off), then pick out the odd clip remains from behind grill.

Then it was a simple push fit for the black surround.

Looks very nice now.

Is it just a matter of ripping and yanking the chrome one out or is there a recommended procedure? I'm scared that it might damage the clips so the black ones can't clip in if damaged.

I undid the top four torx screws and pulled top of the grill towards the front and pushed one of the clips out, this gave me room to get hold of surround with some needle nosed pliers and removed it in pieces, as long as you don't go wild it comes away without damaging any of the main grill. Some of the clips remained in place so I teased them out with the pliers.

I then just end clipped in the black surround.

Superskoda are charging €65 for these grilles, about £50.

They are £45 on Ebay with free postage.

Or about £40 from your main dealer?
