Info on scrapping a vehicle

Featured Replies

Need some advice on getting a vehicle scrapped re what the minimum bits have to be left on the car to still get a Certificate/Proof of disposal.

If I strip the interior, engine, running gear etc so it's literally just a shell with the number plates left on it, would that still qualify?

Number Plates have nothing to do with it.

Be sure the VIN is still on the body you are having disposed of.

Thanks, been told it needs number plates but also that it needs the engine so just trying to find out what it actually needs. Does anyone have a link to any documentation that might help out?

You can sell an Engine, & engines can be reused, they do not need to be scrapped, unless a vehicle is written off where the parts can not be used. (CAT A)

The person buying an engine should get a receipt with the engine number on it.

I expect they will only want to take it with the engine as its worth quite a bit to them. You can scrap a stripped bare shell. I know someone who did just that.

Ensure if being collected scrap man gives you yellow slip and they keep v5. Most metal places now have direct dvla link and provide certificate of destruction for vehicles. :)

Scrap merchants will take a bare shell, didn't even need the V5 as it didn't have an engine.

Thank you all, just VW UK being difficult then...

Those Licensed to scrap or dispose of cars (vehicles) and people who want a vehicle to recycle parts from are rather different in many cases.

Some go by weight, and dispose of and earn from what they get,

and the Shell earns money, and they have little to dismantle in an environmentally friendly way.

?

Is it some 'VW Disposal' site you have used, where they want Complete cars only, with Number Plates fitted?

You can maybe get more locally than this lot. You can get quite a bit more usually.

Can't go into it any further at the moment.

Just get a Licensed Scrapper to do the business on Confirming the Body Shell is Scrapped and disposed of.

That can be minus Body panels. wings, doors, bonnet, etc, nor even plastic bumpers which number plates used to be attached to.

I've had an entirely bare chassis collected before. :)  Got nothing for it, as prices at the moment are rock bottom.  It's just good to have a free disposal service.  A few years ago you'd get £80/£90 a ton for a chassis. :)
