1st MOT and failed on a wheel bearing @9k

yes, was in disbelief today when I got a call from my main dealers (Hayseldens/Doncaster) and they gave me the bad news that my 3 year old vRS with 9k on the clock failed it's MOT on a front wheel bearing :thumbdown:  it's covered by warrenty but that's not really bothered me.. me being the sceptical type couldn't wait to get home and check it out for myself, to my much non-amasement I couldn't feel or hear a thing spinning the wheel (apparently sounds rough turning wheel) so I took it to a friend that has his own VAG indy specialist garage and he says there's nothing wrong with it!

 

are Hayseldens milking the system? more annoying my is I've got to waste a day sorting this out on Monday :notme:

The MOT tester was looking out for you and others safety, and there surely was no benefit to the tester in you needing a replacement bearing.

 

If the warranty did cover the Bearing replacement you would have saved yourself money from no warranty cover maybe in a little while.

But if all is well, and no bearing is required, maybe the Examiner will agree at the re-test, or maybe not.

 

Could you not have left the car at the Main dealer to get the Bearings changed under warranty.

After all the MOT tester failed it on the Bearing.

?

Is the MOT Tester also a Master Tech at the Main Dealer,  no argument then on the Warranty work if it is covered under warranty.

tester is apparently a "accredited advanced diagnostic technician" and it is covered by warranty anyway but that's beside the point, there is nothing wrong with the bearing and they have failed it and that shows up on the MOT history forever.. I don't have much options but to just go along with it and put it down to experiance. my service plan has just run out no so no longer tied to dealers so will be using my local indy for future services and MOT.

Do future buyers worry about MOT history because cars had maintenance done and new parts?

That is a new one on me.

 

no but it makes you wonder why the hell a part failed after 9k that should last 100k+ well, supposedly failed anyway!

Not yet 3 years old, and only 9,000 miles. 

Maybe it has failed for the reason they do, hit speed bump hard,

or the usual, somethings do not last for ever. even if only 1 in 1,000 fail prematurely, someone needs to have that 1.

 

But as you said, the bearing is OK,

so you do not have one that failed at only 9,000 miles.

oh I see, never heard of jetwashing killing bearings before, you would have to be really hammering it from under the car to get to bearings! I swirl the arches out every time i wash the car but nothing high preasure.. I think some grit may have got in the rear disc at time and sounded like a rough bearing, there was definetely no rough sounds when we tried after testing.

Pressure washers can force water in where it's not supposed to be, which will then cause corrosion and failed bearings.

Not had it on a car but I have on a pedal bike.

Jet washes are great at a distance for removing heavy levels of dirt, but they aren't ideal close up.

If you think how effective they are at removing dirt from a patio it's easy to see how they can force water through seals, electrical connectors and so on.

I would generally agree on the jetwash idea but my memory of where the wheel bearing sits in relation to the wheel, top-hat of the disk, and hub assembly would indicate that you would need to be a particularly intrepid jetwash user to get anywhere close to where the bearing sits. Where there is a will there is way though I suppose.

yes, you would have to be doing something pretty dumb to get any water ingress into that bearing..

 

it goes in tomorrow for work/retest anyway, I made a joke at work last week that if it failed I would get rid!! don't really want to eat my words!!
