Even high mileage 1.9 PD TDI's are not known for excessive oil consumption.

 

It could also be leakage in the turbo oil lines or the turbo itself.

If people use 5W-30 on high mileage cars, they cannot wonder it uses lots of oil. It is mechanics - the more miles on thin oil, the more wear you introduce.

 

If turbo leaks, it usually goes to intercooler.

My 2005 Fabia 1.9 PD TDI needed no topping up between oil changes and did not use any noticeable amount of oil while working hard towing a caravan 5000 km on holidays, even with 275.000 km on the odo.

 

Oil used was 5W-30 longlife III spec

What is your oil temp during the heavy duty use, please?

 

What is your cylinder pressure at 275k?

 

What is your oil service interval?

 

What is your driving style? (flatland, twisty alpine roads while towing caravan; I assume car was driven at constant speed with caravan)

 

If you used 5W-30, it doesn't mean it lubricated your engine properly - especially for heavy duty use. It is not as sport driving but similar. Cylinder pressure is messenger of engine health.

 

It is very interesting data for me if you could answer all of them please.

I no longer have the Fabia.

No oil temperature measurements, I only realize now that VCDS lets you do that, providing you have extended service intervals and thereby the oil sensor.

When average consumption of 50 liters during one day is 10l/100 km and instant consumption much higher while using the extra grunt from a 135 hp/310 Nm remap to keep up the speed in the Kasseler Höhe, that's working hard in my terms.

 

The Fabia towed a caravan this way every summer holiday in 10 years, remapped the last 3.

Religious use of the Webasto parking heater every morning at temps below 8-10 degrees C was good for the engine too, eliminating cold starts and driving 25 km with a more or less cold engine.

Mines been leaking from the back of the rocker cover and you can only see the oil that leaks out from under the car. It isn't really visible from the top.

Mind you mine isn't actually loosing much oil.

I presume your car has an undertray which will stop any oil dripping directly onto the floor, but if you are loosing any volume then it would find it's way out somewhere.

 

Looking from the top of mine you can't really see any oil, but remove the undertray and you can see the oil all over the back of the block and gearbox.  What does drip off accumulates on the undertray and the console where the undertray attaches at the back.  The undertray on mine has a sort of foam soundproofing on it which does seem to absorb some oil.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if the smoke is blue-ish this points to oil burning, if the smoke is black this points to running rich (petrol) or overfuelling (diesel)......I think :nerd:

Years ago an old GTI Golf of mine was dumping all its oil into the coolant due to a mega head gasket failure.... :dull: .....How is your coolant ?

Not being tremendously mechanically-minded, I would say that I've not had any reason to think there's anything up with the coolant. When I took it to the garage last time (when they said they were unable to find anything wrong with it) I think they checked the coolant and removed the undertray like trundlenut has just suggested, and no signs of oil in either. This is why I think it's burning off somewhere, but I don't know where!

 

Someone suggested it was perhaps Skoda/Audi/VW piston rings wearing out way too soon, I don't know if there's anything in that suggestion though.

 

You could try some called engine restore which you add to the oil, a mate uses it on his fabia which has also a excessive drink problem.

I had excessive oil consumption on an old BMW 2002, to the extent where you could see blue smoke coming out the back on hard acceleration or on the overrun.

I fixed it completely by doing a full cylinder head overhaul, paying a lot of attention to the valve seats, guides (new guides fitted), seals (they were totally shot - this was the major problem) and regrinding the seats and cleaning up the whole head.

After this it ran a lot better and burned hardly any oil.

I should say that I was lucky in that every cylinder showed good compression.

My current 1.9 TDi PD uses around 0.7 litres of oil per 12,000 miles, maybe slightly more if I have a couple of long trips to Europe in hot weather.

I always use Shell Ultra Helix Extra (now ECT) 5W/30 and the car has now done 141,000 miles.

I don't know this engine in detail but I have seen high oil usage caused by a blocked/collapsed breather pipe causing crankcase pressure to increase which forces oil past the piston rings.

Just a thought

I think that if your car was dumping its oil into the coolant like my old Golf you would know, mine was like grey porridge :| , yours is going somewhere, I reckon it is burning it
