Hey everyone.

It has been discussed that people are feeling a little uncomfortable with the direction this part of the forum is steering.

I feel personally, that this subject needs to be discussed for the good of the forum. Please keep it impersonal, no attacks on individuals. You may need to use tact as this has the potential to spiral. Keep it on topic and keep it constructive. This by no means makes it compulsory for anyone to change, but will be a chance to clear the air. All views welcome.

Mods if this is inappropriate please remove. I understand this may need close monitoring, but this section should be enjoyed by all. Lets get this forum back on track.

I'm a member on another forum that has detailing section sponsored by Autofinesse, many other sites do this, it may be achievable?

I think you could quite happily have a couple of subsections I.e. Products and reviews, technique/ Q&A then finally your details

Good timing as I'm working on the new site which is an overhaul of model v technical areas.

Forum sponsoring is possible, I've only been asked about it twice in ten years though. Then again it's not on the menu, chicken & egg. I've also been weighing up the amount and hassle of sponsors v a supporters only forum... jury still out.

The new site will have a reviews section dedicated to, reviews. We used to carry one on products, gadgets etc, it worked ok, but then failed  through lack of use. That is discussion tended to drift into specific areas, so lets say air filters, we'd see a review of a RAM air max2000 then a few months later, it would appear in a model area, where it fitted.

Over time this pattern repeats enough that the 'reviews' bit withers. The same occurs with subforums, the trend is not to look before posting, watch the forums for a day, the website/feedback forum despite efforts is a frequent first stop for people with issues on the car.

So I'm all for a good discussion, some may recall I appealed for zone leaders, this sort of thing was the specific goal, to marshal feedback and propose enhancements to mini areas of the site. Tracking this topic then with interest to see a consensus form :)

Thanks.

I tried starting a Wax review section

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/372763-the-waxlsp-review-thread/

Had it pinned but its been ignored..despite Wax reviews being posted since

Ive asked for subsections within this Section before, but it hasn't happened

Ive asked a Mod to look into it...Nothing yet

EDIT: Posted while you were posting Colin

I imagine a Section as follows: (Off the top of my head)..Some already exist, but moderation/Merging will be needed some of the time

1. Reviews of Products..Waxes Sealers, Pre Wash products, etc..

2. Reviews of Gadgets..Pressure washers, Air Blowers, Snow Foam Lances etc..

3. Owners Cars..newly cleaned/Detailed...not necessarily friends or for charity....(controversial?)

4. Advice..Have a question? Post here.....

5. Discounts Section from Product Manufacturers Shop...Discussion not necessary..Friction in the past

Discuss?

I get lots of requests to add or create forums etc. A topic like this will be better as it will come to a overall view that works for the group.

Pinned topics traditionally have a far higher views to replies ratio than normal topics. It's been viewed, not ignored. And likewise one topic about 10's of products is hard to navigate and follow. So for a reviews area I'd like to see one 'topic' per product. We also have a soft limit of 5 pinned, this will vary but it's a goal. Pinned should be information or linker topics to other topics, like a roadmap/book index.

Example, the dealers review, when this was open to topic starting, we'd get 10's of topics for the same dealers, by restricting we channel and it's easier to follow the evolution or contra of a dealer.

So instead of a Pinned topic..Have sub sections?

However I find in Tapatalk I don't read stickies because I don't see them because of structure layout unless I'm in timeline mode, not a complaint just trying to give a possible reason,

Yup I agree especially in the discounts etc just put the code and the site, that is all that we need.

Owners cars I like especially if there's a list of products / process underneath the picture collection,

Tapatalk is doomed. Sorry I'm only supporting it through a begrudging veil of no other cards to play at the moment. It's been dropped by a lot of forums and they are useless in support and updates. New site is fully mobile functional and all the bits of the site not in forums work too ;) including bits of the forums that are forums but tapatalk does not show you them. It will be dropped, not many folk are using it, but it will be a wrench I cannot avoid.

4 subforums for detailing?

5. handled in new site by composite discount/deals fora. 1 sticky in detailing linking to topics.

4. main forum for detailing - done.

3. I'd be going for "project cars" which needs a name/purpose overhaul. Balance between tuning/mods/stock and detailing. I'm evaluating a 'garage' like app that allows you to display your car, updates, like project cars forum now , but more hybrid with gallery.

2. Handled by new reviews area/app

1. Handled by new reviews area/app

By area/app I do mean a mini app within the forums, hard to explain easier to show ( soon ), also the bit that tapatalk won't show, like notifications and messages/offers.

With 1,2 & 5 you can link to items in stickies and if it works how I want it might even 'suggest' as per suggested topics box currently shown.

OK

But this will need policing well

I like your idea of a zone leader to marshall it..because people will post in the wrong section...

You need someone who is always here and helping others and has a breadth and depth of knowledge...PM me if you need me ;)

We need your views everyone

The above sounds much better. The section is a nightmare to navigate. Awesome input guys.

For me Chris, and this is not personal, but you are far too involved to moderate and mediate this part of the forum. A deep understanding is not necessary, but impartiality is crucial. For some reason, detailing forums always seems to generate debate that turns in to argument. Knowledge will not help with this, in fact the opposite. Detailing is certainly a passion for you, and passion and mediation/moderation do not go hand in hand generally.

copied across from where we started....

sharing of views for the good of the forum is worthwhile, remember though that views are personal and we differ in perception and how we react.

there is a lot of back slapping, i noticed that.  generally i fnd it a nice trait as it seems everyones efforts, large or small, are recognised.  As a newbie to proper waxing and to this place i found comments i got very encouraging and welcoming.  however i think with the regulars there is a small risk of the back slapping making the place feel cliquey.  I'd say carry on, but try and ensure eveeryones efforts are congratulated equally well.  i think Chris is great at this, but genrally Hunty and others too.

I had noticed Chris ask a few questions and not get replies (nipponshine thread comes to mind) but i'd put it down to the questioned simply missing the question, there are some busy threads or busy people.  if its more then thats a shame, but i hope one or 2 people dont 'own' this forum and push oyhers away, please stay Chris

last one

btw, i've not pm'ed chris for advice, but only because i feel this place is welcoming, not just chris.  That said....chris almost seems like a friendly gatekeeper, often the first, sometimes the only, person to respond.  keep it up chris.

You didn't notice the ;)

However, I cannot share your opinion..but this is what discussions are all about..at the end of the day if the forum is a better place without ignoring participants and easier to navigate, it has to be progress

Exactly. Nice one

I hope Samuir adds to this.  His contributions to the forum are great, and his work very inspiring.  I hope his views are added to this.

So do I Neil

...He's contributed so much in the last couple of years too... I didn't mean that to sound at all patronising BTW

BUT

When he ceases ignoring me...It will be the way forward and the Section can move forward for the better..That is certain!

Another suggestion:

What about a Car of the Month competition?

Obviously Skoda's only....LOL

  • Administrators

Good points raised. It's logical to pick high;y active members to moderate, but it does not work out.

Zone leaders is not new, it requires less specialist area knowledge, more analytical I'd say.

Certainly not after one for each forum, but one for each group for sure. Same goes for area meetings, one per area, one per model and so on, I guess you could say it's like a shop steward, someone to marshall views, not necessarily the specialists. As above and before, 'authority' even a flag of any sort will change peoples outlook on you, it's just one of those things.

@Hunty, which bit above as there are at least 2 different takes ;)

People posting in the wrong section is because we have too many sections ;) Although maybe not too many forums ;) A section is green box on forum list if that helps.

Have this lined up for project updates, so not just detailing as the sites a wider spread.  This is where project car/ garage etc needs an overhaul. I'm scrabbling to clear some client work, when I have I'll get on with the public test site where some of this will appear and can be shaped.

Keep throwing ideas about, if not names ;)

I should have said, not necessarily a Detailing Thread for 'Car of the Month'

Sub Forums within 'Detailing'?

Did you address that Colin?

Post #6 Colin. I feel a 'Filing System' (using Sub-forums) as such, if we have a specific Detailing section, would be beneficial. It depends on what format the forum will take ie, specific Detailing section or detailing in with projects etc.
