Will removing the car battery for charging lose my radio code?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm thinking of taking my varta car battery (about 4 years old) out, to charge it overnight as it is only giving out 12.25V.

My question is, will I lose the car (DANCE) radio code?

Thanks

No. The radio code is stored in the car and not lost with the battery removed.

It may initially prompt for a code but just leave the ignition on for a bit and it will eventually just code itself back in.

This obviously assumes no faults with wiring etc on the car! :)

Thanks Phil.

So it doesn't matter how long it is without power from the battery, as I'm planning on charging the battery overnight.

thanks

My radio - a Swing - before I ditched it in favour of another make certainly lost the code if the battery was disconnected for more than about 20 minutes. I checked with the main dealer who conformed that this is so, otherwise what would be the point of a security code? -  thieves could just steal your radio & reconnect it.

The code is stored in the car not the stereo.

So disconnecting the battery then means the stereo forgets the code. Then when it's powered up again it gets the code from the car again. That way it will only work in the original car and not another without the code.

I will chance it and see what happens. Thanks guys.

Can only repeat. My SWING lost the code when disconnected & I had to request the code from the dealer before I could get it to work again.

Ive disconnected my radio in the past and it has come up with a code.. But then upon turning the ignition on its coded itself back in.

you learn something everyday, I always thought you needed a code.

You can get the code from a dealer if you do need it (:

You need the code only if the radio is transferred to another car. When the stereo is installed in the car as Phil says it pairs with the instrument cluster and you should never need to enter the code again.

Also the dealer cannot give you the code anymore. They have to plug the car into the computer and the coding and pairing is done over the Internet from the factory. The dealer never has sight of the code.

Would this be the same for my original Bolero radio I have in a cupboard?

It will need recoding to the new car?

Yes. It will go back in the original car without issue, but you can't stick it in another car without the code.

I did ask a dealer about this while back and they tell people to use an auto electrician who can extract the code from the HU.

If its possible to do that.. It seems nearly pointless having the code in the first place doesnt it?

Seeing as it is also possible to do it just off the serial number, quite possibly. But it makes it harder to just nick one and bung it straight in another car.

Didnt know that either, but then im not a thief either haha.

Yeah i guess. (:

If it's like the mk1 fabia then it will flash "code" up for a few seconds on turning the ignition then automatically code itself again.

When I had my Maxidot fitted the stereo obviously lost it's code.

I got onto ebay, paid £6, sent them the serial number of my Stream MP3 headunit and they sent me back a code for it. That's all that's needed is the serial number! So yes... the code is pretty much pointless to be fair!

The new MK3 Octavia and Fabia have a different set-up and it's more secure. Currently the only way to swap stereos is with a dealer... but I'm sure someone will find a way around that at some point too.

Out of interest mate.. Did the 4 digit code correspond to any numbers in the serial number? Haha.

Lol. No it didn't. I think they have some kind of software that calculates what the code is based on the serial number.

Aha. Ah fair play.

Thought it was getting abit too easy to be true :D
