Gearbox noise @ 60,000

Featured Replies

I'm currently getting a gearbox noise, not dissimilar to that demonstrated in the Video linked below, on my 2003 1.4 DOHC, 100BHP petrol Fab. It started about August.

With  engine turning, gearbox in neutral, clutch released there is the same "Meshing noise" as described in the video. Clutch depressed noise goes away.

Also, there's a bit of low frequency transmission whine, especially when the block's cold, when moving off in first and transiting through second.

Otherwise no problems with gear selection and operation and the transmission.

According to the main dealer there is a slight seal leak on the input shaft - this might have got worse since they drained and replenished the gear box oil (At my request) at this years service in March.

I'm thinking that this noise  is probably caused by  bearing wear which allows the input shaft to move laterally ?

I'd like to know whether this is rapidily fatal - i'm only doing 2,000 miles at present and had hoped to keep the car going for another 4/5 years.

Cheers.
