Little help from fellow Skoda drivers regarding steel wheels and winter tires

Featured Replies

Hello!

1. I am proud owner of Golus Alloys but I want to spare them from winter and 18 tires are pretty pricey.

I decided I am buying 16 tires and I need steel wheels (5/112/16) but I don't know and can't find in the manual what ET number do I need?

I will buy Skoda original used hubcaps (plastic covers) but I am looking for mint condition used steel wheels so I need to know?

2. Also guys what winter tires brand would you recommend? I live in Croatia capital Zagreb and we have few weeks of heavy snow and some icey roads.

Thansk in advance!

205/55 R16 91T  ET48

Www.mytyres.co.uk have a model selector for our cars, so you can choose your wheels and tyres.

My personal experience has been Goodyear, reasonable price as well as good quality.

Ok turns out spare wheel that came with the car is ET 46.

Which does not support snow chains and thers ET 48 which suports snow chains for 205/55 R16 91T.

Think I will buy

Continental WinterContact TS850

They have the best performance in latest Croatian (German and Slovenian) tests.

I just got some Pirelli wintersotto3 in 18inch for £58 each from mytyres

Unless you spend a lot of time on snow then the TS850s are hard to beat and they have quite a lot of fans here, including me, but they are a 'winter tyre' as opposed to a 'snow tyre'

If you are on snow a lot then there are better tyres suited to that mostly those made by Nokian.

But for your area I think the TS850 is the best for cold wet tarmac with a bit of ice and snow.

Yes cuz we have only few weeks of snow. Roads are clean most of time by winter road service Rest is ice or dry roads.

Before on my parents Peugeot 206 SW I was driving on Sava tires. Never had problems during winter not even in heavy snow and blizzard I was caught on time on highway.

But I wanted something better for my new car.

All I would say is stay clear of the nice n cheap Chinese / Asian copy winter tyres, and stick to a known big or middle brand. The difference is massive as some of the big brand summers do just as well in cold n wet conditions as the cheapo winters.

I run the Continentals and cannot complain. I've also run Falken winters again with little fault. Check out www.autoexpress.co.UK tests on winter tyres, they have the experts confirm what us mere users sort of know.
