main beam at mot

Featured Replies

hi people my mot tester said my main lights are not at the correct beam ...this is what he said

"The beam image is not quite rite it's usually if the bulbs not sat in rite or bin put in upside down"

but they can only go in one way....these have never been changed from manufacture

has anybody else had this issue ?

I've had vehicles at work (HGV mechanic) where the headlamp bulb has 'lost its pattern', giving an incorrect beam image on the headlamp tester.

Might be worth just changing the headlamp bulbs and seeing how you get on. The headlamp beam alignment may have to be adjusted once the bulbs have been changed, which the MOT tester/mechanic may do for you as part of the MOT

Was he talking about main beam or dipped?  I thought the beam test was only done on the dipped headlights?

must be dipped then...for what they cost ill stick a new bulb in

When I was a tester (many years ago!) the test was certainly on main beam, and the setting was 1/2 to one degree below horizontal.

Since then all sorts of 'funny' light shapes and sizes have appeared on the scene - so regretably unable to help.

I am surprised that your garage did not just go ahead and adjust on the spot to enable a pass certificate to be issued - it takes but a few moments to do UNLESS of course there really is a bulb problem (which I doubt)

the mot tester is a friend of mine so he would have done it if possible...I got the pass cert he just said I need to get it looked at to see whats wrong with it.....he passed it the year before with the same bulbs in !

I found the headlight aims tended to be set a bit too low from factory, which would show up at MOT time.

Another possibility is the lens getting sun damaged. Do the headlights look a bit cloudy?

Often they are too low arriving from the factory to the UK and it is a shame that many owners have poor lighting for 3 years until picked up at a Mot

Soon to become 4 years maybe. About time Dealerships communicated this to HQ in CZ.
