New VRS Order DSG or Not?

Ive had two DSG's.....a 180ps twincharger with 7 speed dry in a Fabia vRS estate and a 170 CR with 6 speed wet in a Mk2 vRS Blackline estate.

I liked them and on the whole found them pretty easy to live with day to day. For me definitely worked better on the Fabia....seems to work better with a half powerful petrol and the dry clutch whilst not so smooth in stop/start situations or manouvering provided sharper, more positive shifts when on it. The 7th ratio made a big difference when cruising too.

If the thing hadnt handled like ****, had better brakes and wasnt likely to break Id probably still own it now. I at times do regret selling it and think I probably should have just sorted the suspension and brakes on it. Shame as the motor and DSG combo was pretty bob on.

The Octavia as a car I really liked but I just didnt enjoy driving it. The DSG again whilst great for day to day use just seemed to suck the soul out of the car...difficult to describe but it just seemed to accentuate the CR motors negatives, particularly its low speed lag and insistance to rev right past useful power unless you took control. I also found it frustratingly inefficient....returning only 46-48 mpg on a long run driven v v sensibly, far less if you drove shorter distances or flogged it.

I spent most of the time wishing Id bought the manual.....I sold it to go back to a manual diesel and swore blind Id never have another TDI DSG.

I recently got a Mk7 GTD company car

....I could have contributed a bit extra and gotten a DSG but didnt because the extra tax liability. Im glad I didnt as its a hoot to drive for a diesel with a lovely gearshift.....I now tend to take a country road diversion from the motorway on the way home just to exploit it. The car is that torquey it doesnt require constant stiring of the box and doing between 2 and 3k miles/month I dont find it hard work at all.

If I were looking at a GTI or an R or vRS petrol though I would strongly consider DSG.

I recently picked up my new vRS TDI with DSG box, and I must admit the jury is still out on it.

For the most part it's great on my commute (30 miles each way) when I'm trundling along in "normal" mode. The thing that annoys me is when I'm doing, say 60 on the motorway then put my foot down to overtake, I dislike the slight hesitation while it decides whether it can deliver the power in 6th, or if it has to drop down to 4/5th - in which case you're thrust forward by all the torque.

I'm torn on "sport" mode as well as it seems to rev that high that you start willing it to change up a gear. There have been many instances where I've had to override it it by blipping the paddle up a gear when it's been happily sitting in 3rd at approx 3000 rpm.

On the whole I'm happy with it as it's something new for me to play about with, and I like the relaxing drive I get on a fairly stop/start commute. However, if I was told I would drive a manual box for the rest of my days I wouldn't cry myself to sleep at night.

I've probably given no help whatsoever.....

I think my consumption figures are due to early years spent on small-engined motorcycles - on those you had to keep up the momentum.  If you slowed down too much it took an age to get back up to speed! :notme: 

 

I haven't checked the consumption on the days I decide to give it an 'Italian tune-up'!  :devil:

I've got a DSG TSi and wouldn't have anything else.  The manual ones have really bad clutches so that would rule it out first of all, but other than that the DSG unit in these is better than the older ones. I leave mine in E most of the time as it makes for relaxed driving, shifts early and if you want to give it some then just use manual and you're back to full power. 

Re-map - they are fine up to 500-520nm but I wouldn't run much more than that.   

Economy - I regularly get mid 30's and on motorway runs can get over 40mpg which is brilliant for what it is.  Town driving is mid 20's.

Emergency vehicles - I'm not surprised you see issues, there aren't many cars made that out of the box would be able to take the constant hard driving that is required of them!  That said, the scout/Octavia are pretty good.

Only ever driveh Dsg in the states and liked them. My wife refused to drive the last 2 octy's. So went for Vrs petrol dsg. Absolutely wonderful, effortless, smooth, seems to pull from lights etc quicker as it's, just push the pedal and away.As for stop start, it only comes in when you press the brake hard. Once stopped, ease off slightly and it starts again. Think the restart is slightly more instant in "S" mode on the stick. The only thing I found awkward was the flappy paddles. Got some golf extensions off eBay. One did fall off in the summer heat, so used an industrial silicone sealant. You wouldn't know they were add on's, I they are now at my 10 to 2 driving position.

By the way, be brave go for Rallye Green, especially if an estate. Nice to look at,easy to find in a carpark full of dull colours. First thing people comment on is how they like the colour, it blinds them from the badge. Mpg wise I agree with all above. Now on 15000 miles at at a GPS 72 mph its around 38mpg

Thankyou for the replies guys, I have pretty much finalised my order today with the dealer, after a drive in the manual today its going to be the manual in Meteor Grey with the black package plus and lots and lots of extras! He's given be a pretty good discount and I'll be placing order at the end of the month.. I can't wait!

DSG is quicker for day to day use by anyone less than a Pro racing driver. In gear DSG is faster full stop, remapping the DSG isn't expensive but, only do Sport Mode otherwise you'll get the dreaded TD1 flag.

No DSG=Good choice.
