So I'd need to pair the phone and bt up in a car that has maxidot?

It's an educated guess I'm afraid. You'd need a car that already has BT in to be just unplug, plug and play ;) The BT unit should hold the pairing when you unplug and return it to your car.

If you weren't so far away, I'd let you use mine.

Ideally I need to find someone with BT and vcds locally then. Should be fun.

Thanks alot for your advice

In theory you can pair it using maxidot in another car and then transfer the module back to yours, bit of a pain if it ever gets reset or you change phone.

An alternative is to grab a non premium BT module such as a 7P6 or 5K0 as this should allow you to pair without maxidot and sell the 3C8 D module. The wiring will be the same so as long as everything is correctly coded it should just work.

I think the later ones should be good for streaming music but you'd need to check.

Fixed that for you. Have a feeling VCDS is not so needed as your car/Columbus is aware of the BT.

As Langers says, it will be a pain if you change phones, or want to add the missus' phone.

I have no experience with the non-premium ones, so I have no idea about how you interact with them. I know Adamal is quite hot on the BT stuff.

Langers has the solution. Swap your module for 7p6 035 730 j or above or 5k0 035 730 d or above. They can pair via the head unit and do streaming.

They won't offer premium services like text readout or wifi hotspot but easier than changing the cluster or faffing with another car.

You should make a little on the deal too if you sell the 3c8 module. Try the swap zone on here in the classifieds.

Coding is simple and there are vcds owners in your area, check the map in the vcds section.

Is it hard to add maxidot along with a mfsw? If I took them out of a scrap car say, is it as simple as aslong as it comes out of a mk 2 it will work? Or does it have to be the same engine, year etc.

My cars a 64,1.6 tdi.

It needs expert coding for the maxidot, and it does depend on the car and whether it is petrol or diesel generally.  Best thing to do is to establish the correct part number for maxidot for your car and search it on eBay.  MFSW is easier for the diy'er but you will probably also need an updated steering controller too and more coding, even if you can find the wheel.
