Columbus rns 510

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone could offer any advice?

1. After having problems with the GPS on my columbus rns 510, I played around and it seems to be working again, as it is picking up satellites and can find where it is, only problem being it won't let me use the post codes anymore, is there something in the settings I need to change?

2. After some help off someone off briskoda, I got the Bluetooth activated for the unit I installed.

I now get an option on the media menu for bluetooth but it won't let me press it to open anything? Again is there something in the settings I need to change?

Any advice would be appreciated

Cheers

Josh

Had you got 7 digit postcode search before this? What part number is the Columbus? What maps have you got on it?

Ye it did have them before.

Iv just gone into settings and ticked demo mode and that has activated the postcode.

Still won't allow me to select the Bluetooth though.

You have some strange stuff going on there.

Have you tried a firmware update at any point?

No, it's giving me some grief at the minute.

In the picture you can see that in the media section, it's giving me the option of bluetooth, but it won't allow me to select it.

Hmm. Generally that means the device (like KDI, AUX, or whatever) is coded and connected, but not available. No idea why it would do that with Bluetooth as it's a seperate module, unless the coding for the unit has been reset and Bluetooth is no longer coded?

By coding do you mean activating it with vcds, we plugged vcds in and activated no 77 telephone. But that's as far as my knowledge goes with it unfortunately

Yep, so that the car and Columbus know what options are fitted. Has it ever worked (bluetooth)?

  • Author

Ye. Ever since I fitted it to the car it never allowed me to get past this screen

So I presumed it needed coding, which I managed to get some help with.

But even with that it won't allow me past the screen.

Ah, right. Bluetooth is way out of my comfort zone I'm afraid. Not had anything to do with them simply because I use an old Blackberry which just does calls etc, and I use a Fiscon kit which is more or less plug& play.

But from what I've read or picked up along the way, the Bluetooth part number vs the type of phone you use is relevant, some kits require you to connect via Maxidot (I think), and various other black magic stuff. Perhaps someone with Bluetooth knowledge can help on that score, but things appear to be improving slowly, from what I can tell?

Does the phone think it is paired with the car?

Yes, oddly, the initialisation is done through a menu within MaxiDot. No MaxiDot means you're missing a small but crucial part of the equation.

No the phone can't find anything. I'm guessing I have to find it through my phone first, I will have to try with another phone to see if that works.

Im not to sure if I have maxidot, I'm not all that clued up with the electronics.

Easiest thing.....turn the car on (doesn't need engine running) and post a pic of the instrument cluster.

Also be handy to know what phone you have and which bluetooth module you fitted.

Phone is a Sony Xperia z2

You don't have maxidot.

  • Author

Do you need maxidot for it to work? Iv completely misread when I looked it up if so.

The pairing between phone and car is initiated through a menu on MaxiDot. MaxiDot instructs the BT module to go into pairing mode, you do the same on the phone, they see each other, a quick PIN code and everything is set in stone. Every time you start the car, the BT module looks for the phone. You can also see on MaxiDot who is calling, and scroll through the phonebook,

The BT symbol on the Columbus means that Columbus can see the BT unit. It goes solid when the BT unit is paired.

As a lot of the functionality is also done through the Columbus screen, I don't know what would happen if you paired the phone and BT in another car with MaxiDot and then moved them back to your car. (A faff, yes, but short of replacing the cluster......) I think you'd only need to do the BT unit, Columbus could stay in your car.

See, I knew someone would know what to do.

Ahhhh. Iv messed that one up then.

Cheers anyway.

So I'd need to pair the phone and bt up in a car that has maxidot?

You can get the cluster changed.......but that's out of my comfort zone ;)

Eddie-NL is the cluster master :)

Or go for Amundsen+/RNS315 with BT built in. (and DAB and RVC)
