After engine damage can I upgrade from a 1.8 tsi to a 2.0 tsi?

Featured Replies

Hi! Maybe someone can help with some advice! Basically I need a new engine( second or recon) after my 1.8 petrol 2011 got damaged and the garage suggested to upgrade to a 2.0 one! The story goes: I bought my Superb 1.8 4x4 2011 about 2 weeks ago! Brought it back to Amsterdam from the Uk. It had 100000miles on the clock with full Skoda dealer service book! Next day I took it in to a chip tuning specialist to have it remapped to try to improve performance and get better mpg. Two days after on the motorway overtaking at 100 mph lost power and a shaking appeared ! Pulled over in about 10 miles at nearest stop! AA comes ...verdict only 3 cylinders working , no compression on no 2! Get to the garage next day they say low compression on all of them! Ok! So new engine needed! The garage gives me the option in the same price to get either an 1.8 or a 2.0 ! What do I do? Is the 2.0 more thirsty? Am I going to put more stress on other car components( turbo, clutch, gear box, etc) ? Please if anyone has a clue help me out! Thx guys!

Why a new engine is the first question as if you have lost compression. Find the cause because if the rings are ok it could just be a new head gasket and valve guides seals and valves reset with some paste.

Do a dry and wet test first that will tell you if it is rings or valves.

Dry test is a compression test and wet test is the same after you squirt a few drops of oil into each cylinder before you do the compression test.

Seconded, worth a bit of effort to find whats gone on your engine.

The wet oil test temporarily seals (a bit) the pistons/rigs/bores and raises the compression -  but not the valves / head gasket - NB it will always raise a little bit when all healthy

If you need another engine I'd go for the same 1.8 engine to match the cars ECU mapping etc and any other differences - turbo, exhaust etc.. It saves any complications with insurance (modifications), DVLA  different CO2) .

If it's a second hand engine consider replacing cam chain & tensioner and cleaning carbon from inlet valves/induction whilst engine is out of the car, Probably worth replacing the clutch and I think the 1.8 has a DMF

There are also probably wiring differences between the two as well. You'd need to check the wiring diagrams to make sure you can make any alterations needed.

I'd be Interested see what caused the original engine to 'fail' but in essence I think the 2.0 would be a straight swap for a 1.8.

I can't see much difference wiring or component wise. Is it not the same engine with bigger bores/reworked head?

The biggest issue I imagine, as mentioned, is getting insurance modified and updating chassis/engine VINs to match the logbook.

Is that tough to do in Holland?

Thx guys for all the insights!

As to the change of details in the log book , the car is still registered in The Uk so I guess I will have to do it there!

The new engine arrived today... Is a 2013 with 18000 miles done and costed me 1700 euros +250 labour! Mind you is a school for mechanics garage so labour is cheap! The garage I bought the car from contributed with 1000 pounds as the car is still under the warranty so my bank manager is not going to complain too much! I whish I knew how to post some photos here to show what the garage showed me being wrong with the original engine!

Those photos would be interesting alright. To post them, use an application like photobucket for example where you just set up a free account, then load your photos to photobucket. Once the photos are uploaded it will provide you with a link to each photo that you copy on here. There are other ways too but that's one that I use.

Basically the first pic Is how it should look the second is what mine looks( whatever that thing is) , third is mine too!

Trying to work out what the first/second photo is...from the angle with that gear it looks like it's gearbox surface or something???

The last one looks like a camshaft which has destroyed itself??

Can you add any other thoughts?

Which engine did you get? 2.0?

Dave

Looks like oil starvation...

First and second pic "appear" to be oil pressure relief valve in place and not in place.

Third pic of camshaft also suggests oil starvation.

There will be other issues within engine to cause low compression/misfire...

I got the 2.0! It made sens as it is a very new engine 2013/2014 with only 18000 miles done! And it has 200 Bhp ! I should get the car back next week and I will update the thread with it s new performance! If to tune up the new engine I think I'll need an upgrade on the clutch as the power will reach 245bhp! Any ideas or thoughts on that as I do have the 4x4 version which as far as I m aware has a special clutch in!?!?!???

You'll want to ensure the map for the engine is matched to the 2L as there are several parameters that are quite different.

A mate of mine faced the same decision a few years back on his Octy and as he was running a stock ECU it was decided the 2.0 would run lean without a remap

The remapped 2.0 TSI will be pretty much the same as the 3.6 but without the ludicrous insurance/tax loading. This does mean upgrading the brakes to the 3.6 spec probably wouldn't be a bad idea (I think they only fit behind 18" wheels though). If I wasn't doing highish mileage and mostly intercity driving I'd be after something like this. You're definitely making epic lemonade from those failed engine lemons. Enjoy it :).
