Tyre storage

Featured Replies

Having decided I'm going to invest in some winter rubber for the front wheels. I have the added problem of storage of my current tyres.

As I don't have any spare wheels I'll be simply getting the tyres changed.

So what's the best way to look after my existing tyres once removed?

I'm thinking of giving them a clean and laying them flat in the loft. Anyone else store their tyres off the rim over winter?

Any other suggestions or advice?

Best to store them on end somewhere dark, dry, rodent free, and, ideally, not to warm or cold.

If you stack them, the sidewall can get pushed in. Isn't the end of the world, it just means the tyre fitter has to work a bit harder.

It's a really bad idea to only fit winter tyres to the front...

Having known someone who did and spun off on a corner backwards into a field, I can only second that advice.

What about some of the recent excellent crop of all seasons? They're better for someone who has no storage space.

if you are removing them completely & putting a new set of rims on what is the best way of storing them on their side walls stacked or on the tread side by side

After watching that video I may reconsider and opt for 4 tyres.

I'm not planning on driving on frozen lakes, my issue is I live at the top of a huge hill.

Getting home can be a nightmare in the snow.

I'll have to start looking at 4 tyres now. Probably best after that video considering I'm doing around 15-20k at the moment in the car.

It doesn't matter if they are upright or stacked if they are fitted to rims - just make sure there is some air in them (put 60psi and they will be OK for the season).

If you have reasonably nice alloys put a towel or rag between each rim.

doesn't matter if you are on a frozen lake or an icy raod, if you g round a bend or change direction with 2 winters on then you'll have some entertaining handling characteristics

My tyre garage store them for me for free ( an independent ) he knows I have to refit in the spring ( £40 ) they are chalked with my name and wich corner . No brainer

cheers for that . they are currently stacked on their side walls in two stacks with plenty of air in them just need to check them next year.

have had another thought on this they all currently have the tyres on them. but when i put them back on in the distant future (plenty of years time ) . they are the original LE rims which i have changed out and will put back on when i sell the car.

as i am going to put new tyres on in the future . is it better to store them just as rims covered in my loft or with the tyres on in my wooden shed

There is less chance of the wheels being damaged if stored with the tyres on them.

As for fitting just winters on the front, imagine you are now travelling down that huge hill you live at the top of, if there is ice on the road then the front (winter tyres) wheels will brake well whilst the rears with std tyres will not, causing the rear to break away and potentially spin you round.

IF you HAD to fit just a pair of winters then on a FWD car they would be safer fitted to the rear, personally I would never fit them in pairs though.

One word of caution when fitting winter tyres, several people have been caught out when parking... the car park / road / drive acts as there is no ice on it due to the winter tyres then when you get out of the car you end up on your bum because it is in fact sheet ice!..... winter shoes anyone?  :D

I've parked on a frozen puddle and nearly gone my arse when getting out :)

As to winter shoes, I have a set of these: https://www.icetrekkers.com/product/diamond

They're not cheap, but they're the only ones I could find that did not have spikes on the bottom, so you can walk on roads without problems, plus used all metal on the sole. There are a lot of chains that use rubber linkage underneath which can wear out fast.

Tyre storage

does anyone recommend a tyre rim tree trolley or similar?

this one seems to get good reviews from folk

i have thought about asking my local specialist tyre fitter to look after alloys and tyres - but what if they went bust - i figure recovering my property might be challenging if they suddenly shut down.  Hence storing at home feels safer.

I've got a tyre tree with tyre covers going free if you're in my area? I bought it some years ago to store my winter tyres on, but later switched to using all-season tyres rather than swapping them every 6 months. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig out some details of it. I think it may be a Westfalia one.

Cool. I am near Warrington Cheshire. Are you trentham way?

Just a bit south of there - in Stone. I'll take some measurements and some photos of it tomorrow if you'd like.

that is very kind, but probably too far from me factoring time and cost.  much appreciated though!
