replacement keys ignition barrel advice

Featured Replies

Only me seems to have a problem with daughters car.

I find the key goes in okay, but it just doesn't want to turn   how I feel like it should on all other cars I drive, how hard can it be to turn a key

I knew when bought it allowed for a new key as fob hitty missy, and prefer to have 3 sets.

So, im thinking it could just be just  the ignition switch, rather than ignition barrel.

as both keys open door locks fine.

Unsure how much a ignition switch is alone.

The dealer was charging me £130 for a key, new barrel £60 supply only

now call me for being a dumb blonde, but if I order a ignition barrel is that a whole new unit including switch.

They said they would fit a new ignition and key and code for £210, which I thought wasn't to bad, I remember cost when had to buy a new key for me dads vw, when I lost his key, apparently told discount on parts and labour

Then hopefully have a guarantee on whole unit, as thinking if just change switch over  to pay for key coding, and with her doing lots of short journeys barrel may then fail at a later date, they don't last for ever and car has done 70k already

is it much of a job time wise chaining a barrel?

Im useless with. keys, have 3 for my own car, have learnt the lesson to keep house keys separate from car keys , and bought a whistling key chain, as found it harder just looking for one key.

Daughter again thinks im going over top, and wasting money but after a new key anyway and my key comes as whole unit ,

I was then going to ask garage to disconnect the middle boot button, which I think is a accident waiting to happen if they can if do a reprogramme

You asked this question before.

From the description I would say its is almost certainly the barrel at fault. If it is, and you want the same keys to open the doors and also work the ignition, you will have no option but to get a barrel direct from VAG. They will then send a replacement that will match the original keys.

As I posted last time,  when the ignition barrel on my wife's Fabia started to play up last May (with the same symptoms you report) I was quoted £238 - £328 by a main dealer and £195 - £265 by a VAG indie for supply and fit. Price variations were due to labour requirements - some wanted 1 hour to fit, others wanted 2 hours. Luckily I avoided this by using graphite powder on the barrel which freed it up.

This may sound like a silly question BUT - when you attempt to turn the key, do you move/jiggle the steering wheel from side to side to ensure easy release of the steering lock mechanism?

Very often when people park and the steering lock is engaged, the steering position of the centre column shaft can give a frictional 'grip' with the lock position. Often a very slight movement of the s/wheel either way

can  make all the difference.

Just a thought.
