New Car Winter Seal

Featured Replies

Collecting new car on Tuesday and declined the dealer offer to coat my car, so can anyone recommend a paint sealant system I can apply this time of year as some say do not apply below 15C.

I have arthritis in my hands and spine so need an easy on, easy off product to get me through the winter. The car only comes out of the garage a couple of times a week so is not subject to a lot of UV or abuse, though winter is always hard on a cars finish.

Was going to get it professionally detailed but everyone is busy for about 3/4 weeks and I need to protect the car ASAP and can then get it professionally done in the Spring.

Have always used Meguires Gold Class Wax in the past, looks good but now takes too much effort.

Is there a simple system I can apply with minimum effort, I have an unheated garage to work in and would probably need to do the whole car over 2 or 3 days to protect my joints

I would recommend Gtechniq c2v3.

Ticks all the boxes for you.

Metallic or flat coat paint-work.

Metallic paint tends to look after itself a bit better than flat coated paint.

Any sealer that is easy on yourself will protect the paint-work, no good knackering yourself eh?

All VAG paint is clear coated, irrespective of paint type/colour

So what do you mean by looking after itself?

Recently used some Autosmart Topaz (on my truck) and this must be one of the easiest sealants to apply!

Thanks guys, already have some Sonax I used as a QD, have ordered both Topaz and Powermax and will try each on one half the car to see which suits best.

Nice one

I'm using Winter Coat on Tuesday for a client

It promises much

coated mine in the gtechniq stuff back in july, water still beading like it did just after I applied it

As I still have not managed to get to ChrisR for some tuition I studied a few posts here and on DW and plucked up the courage to use various presents; DAS6 and the ubiquitous Autoglym SRP/EGP. The former made it a lot quicker and easier than Meguiars ultimate I used by hand last winter but I realise the polisher is not an option for everyone. I will get up to you one day Chris!

Arthritic hands and in spine applying sealant by member 'octavia5' (main thead heading)

Didn't want to think over exertion applying sealant..(Nothing heavy meant, nor implied)..just my caring nature coming to the fore.

I saw that. Yes

BUT wondered what you meant by:

I think he means shows a little less swirling/marring than just straight colour and clear coat?

You'd be amazed how much stuff is on new paint work. I used a fallout product (Iron X) after the first wash and it shocked my how much fall out was on a few weeks old car!

I used poorboys white diamond (as its a white car) as the paint sealant - its ok but it's not the easiest to apply.

I then used collinite 476 wax on top of that, it's fairly easy to use and comes off well. Going in to it's second month and still beads very well.

I've washed it once since its first detail - and after washing/drying I used Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer to keep the paintwork protected. Very easy to used.

Ok so I have now covered half the car in Topaz and half in Winter Coat.

This review is simply for application only as I have no way of testing protection or duration at present.

Topaz is the clear winner, wipes on smoothly, wipes off even easier

Winter Coat goes on easily but was a pain to polish off, followed the instructions and let it dry but it left a thick waxy type surface which was hard work to polish off.

Both seem to have left a protected surface but there was a discernible difference with a new dry microfibre cloth gliding more smoothly over the Topaz finish with a slight drag being felt over the Winter Coat finish, this was after a thorough second going over the Winter Coat with extra microfibre cloths.

Time and the winter weather will determine which provides the best / longer lasting protection but I will not be in any hurry to re-coat with Winter Coat at present.

Really appreciate your thoughts on this. Wintercoat sounds good from the product description, but not everyone gets on with all products. Looking forward to other peoples thoughts on it.

I haven't heard a bad word said about Topaz! I must get hold of some to give it a whirl.

Thank you again  for the really informative post pal

Puzzled at your comments re: the buffing stage...I didn't have such a problem at all

Could you have applied too much?

I tried it both ways...As they recommend...left it a few minutes and it buffed off easily enough..I applied with a sponge applicator...very thinly

I also applied as a QD..Spray and Wipe

I found the latter to be the preferred method

Hope this helps

Yeah of course mate.

I really rate it, so easy to use and a really nice wet look to it. Lasts well too.

It's the only product I use on my trim now too as it works so well on there. Loads of uses for it.

Sounds perfect. Thanks pal. I've sent you a pm buddy. Top bloke!

Thanks for the mini-review and application comparison on these products.

I have a freebie sample of Topaz to try (Thanks Ben) and after this - looking forward to trying it.

Keep us uptodate on the longer term protection levels and durability for sure.

Finally got round to the spring clean - car only done 1200 miles over winter and spent most of its time in the garage. Both finishes held up well, not really able to tell any different in protection levels dirt cleaned off easily and surface still beaded well.

However decided to try both again.  As before Topaz went on easiest and buffed up very easily leaving a very slick finish.  Powermax Winter Coat sprayed on fine - used less this time as suggested above wiped over straight away, let dry for the recommended 5 mins but was still much more difficult to buff off, took 3 attempts at buffing before dragging stopped and I got a similar finish to Topaz.

Conclusion Topaz is the choice for me and you use so little that a 1ltr bottle will last the life of the car
