Electrical niggles

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just bought a 2004 sdi estate, has a few niggles.

Glow plug light on dash only illuminates for about a second, and it takes about 3-4 turns of key to get heat in plugs to start.

Steering warning light illuminates on dash occasionally, nothing appears wrong with steering.

Unusual one to finish for the moment, all doors and boot lock on central locking, however when unlocking the boot stays locked unless you open the drivers side rear door, then the boot will unlock???

Thank you

The last one could be a failed microswitch on the drivers door lock unit inside the door. Very common fault. Check if your lights-on alarm works when you open the drivers door with your lights on.

Thought I heard the lights on warning when I first used it, but appears not to work now. Is it all linked to the switch?

Sounds like your battery may be failing, check it and change it if necessary.

Yes, the microswitch controls the lights-on alarm too. If that doesn't work it's a sign that the microswitch may be failing.

Try this - open your car with the remote. Open drivers door and leave it open for about 30 seconds. Does the car lock itself with the door still open?

is the microswitch something you can get separately, or is it part of the door lock?

Will try the door locking thing, just for future, should it only self lock with keys out of ignition?

Battery all appears fine, not slugish in turning over and no obvious battery issues.

Is the glow plug timing controlled by the relay, or something else?

They don't sell the switches separately but you can buy similar ones like I did http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/330840-door-microswitch/

Other than that, you'd need to replace the complete lock unit.

It should only self-lock if the car has been unlocked but a door not opened in about 20-30 seconds. No key in ignition. It will not self-lock if key inserted into ignition before the 20-30 seconds has elapsed.

Thank you for that, will end up doing that soon.

No worries mate :)
