LED DRL problem

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I fitted LED DRLs to my mothers Citigo earlier but the didn't work, they were recommended by a forum member here from HID direct. They're the correct bulbs (w21 5w Canbus SMD) When I replaced the original ones with these they blew the DRL fuse which confuses me as LED bulbs are meant to use less wattage than standard bulbs. There is no mention of needing addition resistors or anything else. Can anyone help? I PM'd the forum member but he hasn't been active on this site since early October so mightn't see the message.

Blew my fuses too. So I gave up with the whole idea. Sorry that's no help to you.

I fitted LED DRL's to swmbo Citigo about a year ago and they are great, never had an issue but forgot where they came from.

About 3 months ago bought some more LED DRL's off the bay for my sisters Citigo and bang, blew the fuses and they also didn't fit too well, seemed a bit too fat and were really hard to push in.

Point being if you do get a good set they work great. My first set were about £20 but cannot remember the supplier and the ones that are naff were about £6.

Thanks for replyin . They fit perfectly & cost £26 so thought they'd be perfect. I still can't understand how they blow the fuses as they are meant to draw less power. So there is no add on or resistor you can use to overcome the problem? or would putting a bigger fuse in work?

BIG NO NO, risk of fire! Oh LED bulbs how I envy them, when experimenting with amber LED DRL's I blew my fuse hundreds of times, got a link to the ones you bought? I'll see if they're ones I bought previous

Haha Hyphons is the expert on these by now

This is the last pair I used before switching to amber http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/r580-w21-5w-7-5w-cob-white-led-bulbs-2-bulbs/ be sure to read my review just in case you get something different to the image

I have the same looking type as the OP has bought but as said one set are fine other blew fuses.

HIDs direct should be good to exchange them.

Did you try turning it around, as on swmbo's set they fitted either way but only operate as DRL'S and side light one way put them in the wrong way and they do not dim.

Having just got my Citigo I was about to pull the trigger on these http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/r580-w21-5w-7-5w-cob-white-led-bulbs-2-bulbs/  (those yellow drls are not nice).

Can someone confirm those in the link are ok, don't blow the fuses, don't need a resistor and dim when the headlights are on (as per the current bulbs)?

Can't even try as they blow the fuse!

Ah, just get yourself some more little fuses and give it a go if you do one at a time they are on separate fuses so just blow one trying it :)

The way the manual describes the fuses is bloody stupid! When playing with new bulbs (all correct bulb types) I was finding it was blowing all kinds of bulb related fuses, but the stupid manual had labelled them as something completely unbulb related so had to resort to a multimeter!

Ftfy :P

I think I figured out why these bulbs are blowing the fuses even though on the invoice, they are identical to Liams, who didn't have any problem with his bulbs. On our invoices it says the bulbs are W21/5W Canbus 27 SMD 5050 LED but as you can see,the box ticked at the back of the bulb packet is 7443 which would explain why the fuse is blowing with even 1 bulb in. I'm going to get on to HIDs direct to look for the correct bulbs instead.

IMPORTANT!!

OK so after emailing HIDs direct a few weeks ago to complain about the bulbs not working, they first suggested putting a bigger fuse in (I explained why you can't ), then they suggested sending me out a resistor (which I pointed out only increases the voltage which would exasperate the problem)

until eventually sending me out a replacement pair. I only got round to changing out the bulbs today as it's been raining cats & dogs here non stop as well as a storm thrown in for good measure! Anyway bulbs worked when I turned the ignition on. Happy Days until one of the bulbs CAUGHT FIRE!!!!!!! Bulb overheated & melted. Head of the bulb fell in to the lense of the headlight so now I have to remove the headlight to get it out. Lucky no damage done to the car or holders but DO NOT BUY THESE BULBS!!

This'll be why you want to remove the headlight then, what I'll do for you is PM a basic guide to removing the headlight later on this evening

Thanks Hyphon, I'd appreciate that.

Adding a resistor would actually decrease the voltage. This would also result in lower current flow through the chips, meaning less heat. You should of listened to them, hate to say it. Hope you get it sorted though
