Ignition feed from fuse box for an auxiliary power supply

Featured Replies

The lighter socket in my 2011 Fabia is permanently live which is quite useful sometimes but I'd also like another socket that would only be live when the ignition key was in the accessory or ignition on position. Please can someone let me know if they've done this to their Fabia and how they did it.

Thanks

I've done it, give me 5 and I'll write it up

Thanks, that was fast I only posted this 1 minute ago! Cheers

I used a piggy back fuse holder on one of the spare mini blade sockets and took the wire through the back of the dash to the side panel of the dash at the drivers door, there I was able to fit a female 12v socket. What do you need the power feed for? I use it for my dash cam and it's perfect. I think I used fuse 17 (3rd from right on top row) but can check if that's the route you want to go down. No tools required other than the tools required to crimp the socket to the piggy back fuse wiring. No cutting of the dash etc.

I lied, it's on the bottom row.....

Socket hidden in the side panel, plenty of room....

Earthed in the side panel.....

Fuse 2nd from right on bottom and then arrow 2 shows where I fed the wire behind the dash...

Car has been to main dealers twice for servicing and nothing said.

Thanks, I want to use it for a dash cam too, at present I have to remember to plug it in every time and when I got in the car yesterday it was still plugged in from the day before. I have bought a double lighter socket which I'd like to fit in the upper glovebox, I would also like to fit a DAB antenna which needs power that's why I bought the double socket. Did you have to fit a new plug to the end of your dash cam lead?

I bought a couple of spur fuses which sound like your piggy back one but I really wanted to wire the supply into the back of the fuse box

Thanks

Just posted some pictures. Mine I have been there for 2 years without a problem.

I used the existing plug off the dash cam and the wiring was long enough to run up the a pillar and across to the centre of the windscreen.

Thanks for posting the photos they're really useful, I'll be having a look at mine this week

Did my cam today following this, many thanks for the photos and write up.

I did almost the same as jonro but used one of these instead:

Bit neater as it takes up less space and you've got a spare connection for something. I use them around the house for various things as well.

I would also recommend fitting on of these around the power cable to reduce electrical interference.

Wrap around several times.

Excuse my ignorance but how did you connect the converter to the fuse box, did you remove the board and tap in at the back using a scotch block? It would certainly be neater. Also, the power lead for the dashcam has an inverter built in to the 12v plug, did you use a different lead to power your dashcam?

I'm trying to fit a dashcam into my 2015 mkV mondeo, I cannot for the life of me find a switched live in the fuse box, it seems all the fuses are protected by a timed shut down programmed into the ecu, they stay live for about 30-60 minutes. Nightmare

. Replace the cigarette lighter you used for this. So find a switched live (I used the rear wiper on Fabia and an empty fuse socket on the superb) attach piggy back fuse (soldered). Add a forked spade for ground and voilà.

I use them with my Raspberry Pi, a small atom based PC and other projects.

I need to swap to one in the superb as still a socket and its messy.

Not sure about the Mondeo. Have you checked things like the rear wiper? Sounds like it almost might need a relay.

The lead for my Dashcam has a 12v converter plug on it that fits directly in to a 12v socket so USB would be of no use to my set up.

I've never used a relay before but from what I understand that wouldn't solve the problem of the socket staying live for a period of time after the ignition is killed. He relay would still be receiving power so wouldn't do anything, or am I totally off? Like i said, never used a relay before so I'm most likely well off. All the fuses seem to remain live, even the rear wiper.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I was wondering if it was possible to re-post your pictures jonro?  I've sourced all my bits and am ready to go, but now the pictures have disappeared
