Fuel not priming/squirting when cold

Featured Replies

I "think" this is whats happening...

Basically on startup, I'm used to the squirty noise that is the system priming itself. However, in this cold weather (started her in minus 5 this morning) I can hear no priming noise and the car is pretty lumpy for the first minute or so. And after starting up, I can then hear the squirty noise, but its a bit erratic.

Car is fine once its run for a bit. Tickover isn't varying or anything and although its taking time to warm up in this cold weather, its running well. :)

Forgot to say that there is also some form of squeaking from the engine bay, like a fanbelt slipping, but quieter - again its only for a few seconds on freezing cold startup, and goes away pretty quick.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the diesel gets warmed in the fuel lines before it reaches the engine so maybe the fuel isn't able to flow properly until it's warmed? Although that wouldn't explain how the engine can run before the fuel pump has primed!

Noticed the squeaky thing the last couple of days, although I'd say it was more a quiet whistle than a squeak. Happened the whole time I was scraping the windows, but stopped after I started driving.

Agree with the engine being well rough until it warms up too. Don't remember it being this bad last year...

As for the squirting noise, I thought it only happened when you were low in fuel, but you're right, it doesn't seem to happen when it's really cold...

As far as I'm concerned none of the things carry on after the car's warmed up so I'm not too concerned! :)

Mine doesn't seem to make the "squirting" noise that loudly if the fuel tank is over half full. When it falls below half it seems to squirt Louder!

I'm not bothered either TBH - until I get some symptoms that are more physical. :)

Nice to know others have similar noises and no issues - must be normal I guess. :D

Perhaps you got some diesel forzen in the pipes during the night henc e the spluttering on first start up.

are you sure your glowplugs are working properly??

mine is a bit rough for first few seconds if i dont wait for the plugs to warm

What temperature does diesel get a little solidified I wonder?

A google turned up 20 deg F which is -6 deg C. The fuel companies should have put some anti-waxing additives into the fuel for the winter though to reduce the likelihood of this this happening... :D
