Have i brought the wrong model of Roomster (1.2 greenline TDI)

So, having owned a 1.2 TDI Greenline for 3 weeks, we are happy - nice car which feels safe (poor heater / demister) but we can live with that. What is the problem is that it is 19,000 mile 12 plate car - just 3 years old and in the 3 weeks we have owned it the DPF light came on. Not a big deal some might say ....I hope so otherwise we have got the wrong model.

 

I have had numerous diesels in the past with no problem previously, this is my wifes car and covers short distances.

 

So we have done 350 miles, of which 120 miles have been 60 mph open roads; the others are mainly short distances, the DPF warning light came on. Looking at the manual, I took it for a 20 minute burn at 1800 - 2000 rpm. This did not  fix it over a 25 mile (40 minute) drive with the only exception to engine speed being roundabouts - where we live we  do not have non stop open roads.

 

So 25 miles and still the light on - I needed more diesel (no bull - we were low), stopped a couple of times and then drove back to Weymouth which was another 8 miles and the light actually went off.

 

Now I have a dilemma, looking at websites (rightly or wrongly) there was an article stating that the 1.2 TDI is not suited to round town use - CAN anyone quantify this for me????

 

If the DPF needs a burn out every 1000 - 2000 miles then I can live with that but if it only lasts between 300 - 400 miles without a burnout then this car is not suitable for my use - i.e. not fit for purpose. I have tried to research how long it would take to get a DPF to the point where it needs the regeneration cycle but this is always dependant upon the conditions etc. Have read threads about the cycles etc. but it is difficult to quantify if this will keep happening every 300 - 400 miles.

 

I am trying gather opinion - hope that our experiences are not going to become normal every 300 miles or so or the car will have to be replaced - the dealer did not explain this to me despite being and Audi / VW specialist - just a little concerned!!!!!!

The problem is you do not know how it was driven before you bought it, I would imagine if you bought it from a dealer then it would of had lots of very short journeys (in and out of the workshop, around forecourt etc).

See how long it takes before the light comes on again and go from there.

Thanks gizmo (& yes I mistakenly posted in the wrong sub forum). Contacted the dealer to see how long before another blowout would be needed based up town driving - needless to say he wouldn't quantify it at all. So guess we drive till the light comes on again, just wondered if other forum users had experience of this reoccurring issue.

The light shouldn't be coming on as a matter of routine.  In 30 months and 29,000 miles my light has never come on.  The light only comes on if it has tried and failed several times to do the routine regenerations.

Provided you generally drive sufficient distance to get the engine reasonably warm with the occasional motorway or A road trip of 20 or so miles, the normal routine "invisible" regenerations should just happen.  What kills DPF diesels is 1-2 mile school and shopping runs - they need to stretch their legs once or twice a month.  Mine is a 1.6TDi but I guess the principles are the same.  I can detect a regeneration happening by a few tell-tale signs:

  1. The tickover speed increases from 800rpm to 1000rpm
  2. The oil temperature (I have maxidot that has a readout for this) rises VERY quickly getting to 100-105 celsius under light running and once reached 120 celsius on a very hot day driving over the M62 up from Manchester to Saddleworth at (hahum) 70mph.
  3. There is a very slight stutter on gentle acceleration and a very subtle change to the engine note on light throttle.
  4. The cooling fan continues to run after the engine is switched off - only happened twice to me, I assume when the regen is in progress as I pull up and stop.
  5. There is a smell of hot rubber when you get out of the car.

Regenerations have started after as few as 5 miles driving from cold and are generally over within 3-5 miles.  I have probably noticed around a dozen in the time I have had the car and I am sure that many more have happened without me detecting anything.
