  • Yep, got it at lunchtime.   I had originally planned to by a normal Rapid (liftback), SE spec with 86PS, and that was what I drove. I went back the following day and it had sold, so I paid a deposit

  • I've often wondered about this. There's plenty Skodas in our area, including a fair few new shape Fabias yet I have seen precious few Rapids and just one Spaceback.   Lots of people comment on the p

  • I collect my Spaceback next week. Its a tough car to beat for the price imho.

More than welcome and I know what you mean from my brief Octy III ownership experience :D

Hi Glosrich.Just had a look at the Spec for a 110ps Octavia in SE trim and the spec bares comparison with my 110ps Toledo Style Advanced. In fact the Octy is only a few hundred pounds more expensive with added features and indeed a few pounds cheaper as standard although I am not sure you would get the same level of discount you can get on a Rapid/Toledo.I appreciate that the Octavia is a  larger, more modern design and has won awards but did you ever consider a Rapid? There does seem to be some overlap on the markets for these cars.I noticed also that the performance/mpg is very similar between the two models.

I think the Rapid is a good alternative to a Mk2 Octavia, certainly the liftback version is almost as big!

Thats why I went for the Octavia. In my opinion its a bit bigger, and more refined. No offence to you guys, just my opinion.

Also with the deal I got, it was a very similar price as a Toledo or Rapid.

As I mentioned, I couldnt get any interest out of 2 SEAT dealers to sell me a Toledo. I can only conclude they make very little money out of them, due to the big discounts.

Initially we wanted a Toledo, as my wife has an Ibiza, but the Octavia felt better to us.

I think both the Octavia and the Rapid have some faults and issues, but I find out a lot more about the 1.2 TSi on here that in the Octavia section...

The Octavia is clearly a better choice for someone aiming at the space of the Liftback. For a few extra pounds you get more comfort, higher specs and even more space for the rear seats and boot.

You can't really compare the Octavia with the Spaceback though, as the former is considerably longer and more expensive - clearly different segments there.

Mate, tell me where a new Octy is on between £11 to 13000, and I'll be round there like a shot.

(because that's the sort of price a top end petrol Toledo sells for with 0 miles on)

I almost agree with you. :)

Comparing the smallest 1.2 TSI SE equivalent spec cars with no options etc, the discounted prices on drivethedeal.com today are:

Fabia Hatch SE - £13,303

Fabia Estate SE - £13,756

Rapid Liftback 90 SE - £13,729

Rapid Spaceback TSI 90 SE Tech -  £13,102

Octavia SE - £16,574

(Edit to add - drivethedeal don't list the Toledo, but new-car-discount list the Style at £13,695)

I'm sure there will be spec differences between them, but the Rapid and Spaceback look astonishingly good value against the Fabia hatch and estate, and significantly cheaper than the Octavia. I bet the Octavia (and Fabia for that matter) residuals are stronger though which may make them a better prospect?

The Spaceback fills the massive gap between the Fabia and the Octavia, whereas I see the liftback as an Octavia 'value', certainly in my eyes anyway.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Rapid and Spaceback are aimed at the value-conscious, but they are still nice cars, especially when compared to the segment below - which they certainly compete with on price.

I'm surprised how few Rapids are on the roads though, I think the Octavia must outsell the Rapid about 5 to 1!

Last year one of us on here got a zero miles top of the range loaded Toledo SE Nav for £11500 (not me btw) which way undercut drivethedeal at the time.

Mind you the Octavia price listed above is so far out of my price range, it's not a viable alternative for me - being 3.5k more than my absolute max spend.

Yep it wasn't that cheap, if you're a cash buyer £13k for a new car with that spec is hard to ignore.

As I financed it, the better residual on the Octavia made the monthly cost similar.

Octavia 1.2 TSi 110 SE Manual hatch is £14400 on Broadspeed.com.

You can see why its worth considering over the rapid/toledo.

Its also built on the later MQB platform with a lot of Golf mk7 parts.

A fully loaded Toledo at £11500 is bonkers value for sure.

It is when the RRP of the SpaceBack SE Sport with the 1.4 TDI unit is £17,500 :o

But then the Toledo is a hatch (i think) which to be honest i didnt like the look of.

The spec wise of the the SE Sport ticks the boxes i think.

Edited by RickTT

Agree - the SE sport is properly specced up just like a Toledo SE Nav or a Toledo I-tech.

The £11-13k estimate was based on the standard SE Nav spec - Satnav, DAB, Phone, Climatronic, Cruise, Park sensors, MFSW, 16's, Cooled Glovebox etc.

I managed to get some nice 17's thrown in as well. :)

The SE Tech Spaceback is pretty loaded too, only missing panoramic roof, sports seats and bigger wheels and some styling bits I think?

They are cracking value.

Having extensively investigated the parts catalog of the Rapid vs other Skoda models, even cheaper ones, I can assure you that Skoda has done every budget cut it could on the Rapid, at least when it comes to comfort features. And I keep finding things that the Rapid lacks, whereas the Octavia or even the MK5 Golf has. Recently I found out for example that it doesn't have an air quality sensor for its Climatronic, a feature introduced back in 2005 and which costs under 30 pounds to implement, however they chose not to.

All these budget cuts are rather difficult to notice before buying, just saying.

Yep.

I've also noticed no one-touch operation for the electric Windows and no remote opening of the electric windows with the key fob. There will be other things for sure.

The Rapid is aimed squarely at the cost-conscious. Compared to Fabia it is astonishingly good value. Do I regret not shelling out another £3k+ on an Octavia? Not for one second. (I used to run a Mk2 VRS 2.0TFSI so I know what I'm missing out on ;) )

Wow that's a good deal on the Octavia! I'd have gone for that new over my used Rapid for sure. Oh well, I'm still delighted with mine.

(64mpg on my commute to work this morning - I could hardly believe it! I was stuck behind a skip lorry for 15 miles but still!)

Be lucky if I got 40 mpg today despite travelling approximately 150 miles on open A roads and duel carriageways. The constant driving rain and standing surface water took a heavy toll on fuel consumption; probably been better taking the diesel Volvo but the Spaceback was the more practical for the 'mission' in hand.

Mind the old Spaceback drove impeccably on its 17" Nokian A3 winters, not putting a tyre wrong in the very poor conditions and I still think its a better car than the uncomfortable Octy III, despite its no frills approach to motoring.

no thrills or no frills???

Apologies long day;

Spaceback no frills

Octy III no thrills

of course  :giggle:

Boring post alert! 99.9p/l, 49.8mpg = 9.1ppm. Mega! Don't think I've ever had a car before that genuinely does 50mpg on mixed driving. Well chuffed.

That's some town work, some gentle A-roads (commuting), 100 miles of motorway and a couple of triple figure blasts. :)
