Opel (Vauxhall) question

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if it's the right place for the question but at least I hope so :)

A relative of mine bought an Opel Astra H (the same as Vauxhall Astra) with 1,6 petrol engine (twinport). Now he's worried about 2 things:

1) sometimes after a cold start car shudders. It happens like once in 4 times. It never happens after starting warm engine.

2) idle revs "float" (basically, they are changing - a bit more, a bit less than standard).

Maybe it's nothing but he's worried that it might end with some serious problems. Any ideas what might cause that?

I thought that it could be either fuel thing (filter or injectors) or faulty lambda sensor.

throttle body clean and reset?

I'm not sure I'm following.

Could you explain it for me?

Fault codes. It's either a dirty throttle body or a sick idle stabilisation or cold enrichment, but code reading is cheaper and easier than throwing parts at it and hoping you get the right one first time.

So, if there are no fault lights on, will the code reader get something?

Non-GM experience says quite possibly.

Ok, thanks!

I'll tell him your advice.

I'd suggest opcom, paid £30'for mine and it's VX specific so covers all car parameters. Also has it had a decent service?

Could be wiring fault on injector loom, quite common on the 1.4 and 1.6 twinports.

If you mean the car judders when pulling away from a cold start, then that's an incredibly common issue with the clutch. I had an Astra H for 3 years and I just got used to it. I think it's something to do with the asbestos-free material used in the clutch. You can replace the clutch but it'll probably come back.

One other tip for the Astra H... DON'T try to use the windscreen washers if the temperature dips below the freezing point. It'll blow the fuse, which also services the electronic boot lid handle. I got in the habit of using undiluted winter screenwash so I didn't have too many problems, but I always carried a few 10 amp fuses just in case ;)

One other thing I forgot to mention. You can read codes on the Astra without a reader. With the ignition off, put your foot on the brake. Turn the ignition on (so all the warning lights illuminate) but don't start the engine. If you keep your foot on the brake for a few seconds, any stored codes will show up on the odometer display.
