Winter wheels & tyees

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently bought a set of winter wheels and tyres, given the usual Scottish weather and being a taxi driver in a DSG I couldn't refuse the bargain these wheels seemed to be!

Anyway after doing a bit of checking I *think* they will fit my mk III, but does anyone know for sure if they will? Lol here are the fitments etc:

E16x6.5J 47

Stud pattern - 5 x112

Tyre size - 205/55/R16

They sound like the right size. But you'll have to check clearance over your brake calipers to be sure.

If the center bore is 57.1 mm they will fit perfectly, unless you have a vRS.

Nah it's an SE I have, I had a look on a fitment site and they match up with what's on the car just now so hopefully they'll be fine, or I don't need to use them!

They should be fine, although being 6.5J rather than 6J you will want to be careful if you may need chains, as the chain approved ones are all 6J IIRC.

As for if you need them, it's reporting at well below 7 degrees up there, so they'll benefit you for sure, regardless of snow.

I doubt we'll get snow bad enough to need chains but never say never!

With proper tyres you wont need chains :)

Yeah it's Pirelli Winter 190 that's on the wheels, not sure what they're like but Pirelli is a good make isn't it? :D

Also, would it be silly if I were to put them on the car now? We've had nothing but rain the last fortnight and the past few days hasn't been over 5 degrees...

Precisely why they'll be perfectly suited to fit now.

As has been said by many people smarter than me, they're not snow tyres, they're cold weather tyres. Supposedly better than summer tyres when the temperature is below 7°C, even on a dry road, but they're not going to melt at 10-15°C anyway, so I'd get 'em on ASAP (I live in the south and have had mine on for a couple of weeks).

To paraphrase the good fellow with some timely advice I often relay to my son and heir:

Get yer rubber an as soon as ye hae a stainer. ;)  It's too late after you've had an accident.

Factory rims of my car are with 46mm offset. I found a used steel Jetta rim set with 50 mm offset. Perfect fit, no problem so far. I guess 1 mm offset will not be an issue, Tolerances should be more than that.

I cant see an issue with what you have bought.

I have ordered after taking advice from the sellers...

57.1 bore

48 offset

5x112

6" width

16" diameter

tyres are 205/55 R16 91H (same as my summers, but they are contis summers)

Glad I'm not the only one buying winters this year, down to one car now and thought it would be a good idea safety wise for the wife and kids.

Steels and Dunlop winter sport 5's arriving tomorrow, bet it doesn't snow down south this year!
