unusual winter related rear wiper fault estate

Featured Replies

i have an Octavia scout and the rear wiper seems to work fine all summer kong but as soon as there is a few days solid rain it gives up again or starts working intermittently. When working it always returns to it's normal rest position and seems to work smoothly but when not working it also operates smoothly but can stop at any point in the stroke and will stay in that position for the remainder of the journey or Journeys until it feels like working again.

I suspect some sort of moisture / wiring issue going back to the motor but haven't removed the plastic trim yet to see if any damage visible on or around the motor. is there anywhere on the way from switch to motor where is liable for friction and / or moisture?

or should i tart by looking at the motor?

many thanks!!

Exactly the same as my car, I think it goes into retirement in December and starts working again mid march..every year without fail.

Mine too, Just started on saturday night driving home in the rain, was ok then started to sweep the rear screen very slowly then gave up and stopped. Got home, Switched off and wiggled the wiper arm, tried it again and it worked normally..

Do a quick search, there are plenty of complaints on here with additional information.

The rear wiper motor is a well documented weak point on the Octavia, both the hatch and estate.

Water ingress and the resulting corrosion is the likely fault.

It seems more common on the hatch, perhaps because the hatch is more popular or because the rear wash function passes through the motor.

Either way you'll need to remove the plastic internal tailgate trim to access the motor. Once the motor is open you'll likely see a lack of grease or lots of rust or both.

They can be repaired but it is a fiddly job. Most people swap them out for new.
